HMV launches pre-owned assault

Games trade-ins can be used to build credit on anything in store, says High Street giant

HMV has confirmed its entry into the pre-owned games market under the Re/Play brand.

It will be officially launched on Friday 24th October with an extensive marketing campaign featuring national and consumer press.

MCV was first to reveal HMV's plans in the pre-owned space back in June after the appointment of former Choices man Martin Baxter.

Re/Play will launch in 160 stores across the UK and Ireland, including regional flagships in London’s Oxford Street, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast and Dublin, before being rolled out to the rest of the chain in the New Year.

The offer will enable customers to exchange games for credit against the purchase of other games titles, but can also be traded in for credit on the purchase of all other products sold at HMV, including CDs, DVDs, Blu Ray, technology devices such as iPods and games consoles, books, t-shirts, concert tickets and more.

“HMV Re/Play further underlines HMV’s growing credentials as a games specialist, and enhances the credibility of our games offer through extended range and by providing a strong value proposition to our customers,” said HMV head of games Tim Ellis.

“This represents a great deal for our customers, as well as for our industry, as we believe it will help to drive footfall and stimulate increased sales of new games releases and hardware, as well as other entertainment products available from HMV.”

HMV Re/Play manager Martin Baxter added: “This completes a credible, comprehensive and compelling games offer for all games customers, and in particular firmly puts HMV on the map as a games specialist for core gamers.”

Vs CEX?

At present CEX is the only retailer to offer the highest amount for trade in's on games and everything else, there is one near me and Gamestation are even price matching the CEX store on trade in's which is awesome.

I wonder how much HMV will offer on trade in's.

Superb work Stanley Edwards :D

Spotted this pre-owned in HMV today. Two games for £30. Was tempted to pick up Oblivion and Uncharted for PS3. Now THAT's a bargain!

The prices are not great from what i have seen, and they only accept games that they sell so you wont be able to take all your old crap back.
PS3, 360,PS2,WII, DS is all

No different to what Gamestation and GAME are offering then.

I still will want to know what their trade in prices are I bet the will never be able to match or beat CEX.

Cheaper to buy new

HMV is playing the old Game trick of selling second-hand stock at higher prices than its own new stock.

Example: HMV's high street stores sell new copies of Ghost Squad (Wii) at £20 each (or effectively £15 in the "2 for £30" offer). However, they are selling second-hand copies at £22 each.

There was a reason they dropped it before, and I can see it going wrong for them again.

I do hate it when another store starts trading items in, as they always accept product of a lower quality of condition, so I always get the groans when we refuse to take an item in poor condition on the grounds that "Store X down the road offered me £Y for this..."

I can understand why they are doing it as they move more into games and films, but unless they get it right, it'll be a big disaster.

a natural move for hmv as 75% of their sales come from cd and DVD, both dead formats. I agree they will struggle to compete with dedicated 2nd hand retailers such as CEX.

I guess they have to get their stock from somewhere if Entertainment UK is 1 of their suppliers.
Something like this should be introduced after christmas not before - watch their sales slow due to customers not wanting to wait to be served cos the kid infront wants a better price for his scratched game collection.

HMV will be out of business after this!!!! They must be mad trading in second hand games. Fakes galore and lots of nicked ones as well.
Avoid them like the plague.!!!!!

Why do half the punters out there feed the disc to their dog before trading it in though? A game I got from GAME looked like it had been in one of those forensic destruction test labs.

I work for Blockbuster situated very close to a Gamestation store and we are always cheaper than them and offer the best prices on trade-ins. Not a lot of people know that Blockbuster is a serious retailer of games, but that is their main focus now rather than video rental. So if you want the best prices for your games get to your local Blockbuster. Seriously. I hate my job but I wouldn't trade my games in anywhere else.
