Call of Duty: World at War will beat Gears of War and Resistance 2, insists publisher

Activision-owned developer Treyarch feels its latest Call of Duty title will top the likes of Gears of War, Far Cry and Resistance 2 to become the must-have shooter of Christmas.

World at War is the sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which topped the Christmas charts last year and is still the most played game on Xbox Live. And Activision's senior producer Noah Heller, insists that fans of that game will not be disappointed with the follow-up.

“There’s a lot of competition this year, but I feel very strongly we have the best shooter this Christmas,” he explained. “There is a lot of people new to the Call of Duty franchise following COD4, and they won’t be disappointed.

“I’m looking forward to Gears of War, Far Cry and Resistance 2, and I’m sure they will be great games, but I am confident the consumer will come back to Call of Duty.”

However, Heller admits that following Modern Warfare has been a massive challenge for the firm.

“Along with the ‘why are you returning to WWII?’ questions, we’ve been asked ‘how are you possibly going to follow up COD4?’ And the answer to that question was not to focus on the previous game, But to make our own game on our own merits and our own strengths, and show people what we can do.”

Call of Duty: World at War will be released on Wii, PlayStation 2, PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Nintendo DS on November 14th.

Also the cheapest!

CoD hasn't had a good shooter since UO. Resistance 2 actually brings something new to the FPS genre, whereas, WoW is basically a revamped CoD2. No thanks. If I want to play it, I'll download it for my PC. Thankfully, no such piracy issues on my PS3.

I love COD 4 not interested in world war shooters! Also Gears and Resistance will be huge this x-mas, COD 5 has no chance. Bring on COD 6! Inifinity Ward rule!

Hey guys,

This is Josh Olin, the Community Manager here at Treyarch Studios - just wanted to give you a heads-up that Noah Heller does not work for Treyarch, he is a Sr. Producer at Activision.

We at Treyarch worked really hard and are excited for our game, and are happy to hear Activision is excited as well. If they think we're "best shooter" material we see that as a compliment.

We're always humbled by our community and want you to be our judge =).

Regards,
-JD

If you treyarch guys are looking at this message then listen up. Me and about 100 people i know who have COD 4 think COD 5 looks worse. Modern warfare was the way to go.

Seriously hand on heart if COD 4 and COD 5 were released on the same day this year everyone ive spoken to about it would get COD 4. COD 4 looks better yet you've had and extra year.

Everyone i know is sick to death of this WW2 genre and it very boring. COD 4 has set the bar now and there's no going back. Its either modern warfare with red dot sights and P90's or nothing. I know you put effort into it but your deluded to think people will actually buy this and love it. Ive played the beta and already ive decoded instead of buying this im going to buy back COD 4 and thats just a joke.

You have more perks ect but ffs we want our SAW's, 50Cals and 'cool' weapons not this **** weve seen 100 times befor and is useless. An m14 red dot sight or an M1 grand with a cross hair. How have you spent a year making this and not thought "are we going backwards" ill never know

@1: I seriously hope that MCV is logging IP addresses on these comments. Because, to say that you are going to "download" it on a games industry board, where developers (like me) are going to read it, is quite frankly, stupid.

Hello all,

We have reason to believe this is not actually a pirate or torrent fan – but somebody deliberately trying to sabotage our comments system and upset our retail community. Many of these ‘conversations’ actually come from the same IP.

Not 100% sure why they're doing it - unless they're from a rival site or something.

Sad, really, but there you go – some people have too much time on their hands.

Stick with us. We're removing their comments and blocking their IP where we can.

Your assistance in helping us remove these unhelpful elements is much appreciated.

Cheers,
The MCV team

I fell like the only one who's glad that WW2 is back, I loved UO and COD2, give me a Kar 98K over an M16 any day. I played the original COD to death on PC multilayer so probably a bit biased to WW2. I don't know why people have a go a Treyarch, its not Activision so its not like they are diverting recourses away from the development of COD6, COD 5 is a separate game, if you want it get it, if not you can wait for COD6. You can't make the same game to suit a tiny part of the market. Merrit COD 5 on its own aspects and be happy that we have another game to play with :)

Thank God there are some people out there with common sense. You can't compare a game like COD 5 to COD 4 it's like comparing Halo 3 to Counter Strike. Sure COD 5 is in world war II everyone knows. Trey Arch is trying to avoid the monotony of that by letting us see the pacific campaigns. It brings a lot of new things to the COD table so calling it a downgrade of COD just doesn't fit. If you didn't like it after playing the beta that's nice you have an opinion just like everyone else. If you didn't want it once you heard World War II you should try to be more open-minded. I for one am going to buy this game the week it releases.

I have not played the beta, but I am looking forward to COD5. My girlfriend is already sick to death of me and "that flaming xbox" so another COD game could be divorce material. Plenty more fish in the sea.

I am more excited about Jasper though than COD 5. As soon as I get a positive ID on one of those, then there will be a new Elite sat under my TV.

Why no motion captured animation?

CoD4 is a great game and CoD3 was a sucker, but now I have confidence that Treyarch will probably publish the most intense CoD so far. It does not look worse than CoD4 - since it's the same engine - and WWII does have lots and lots of cool military operations to play thru, so it's far from dead. I want variety and not a strict limitation on modern warfare. That was a cool idea and it is fun to play, but let CoD be open for all kind of warfare I say - including WWII games. My only real question is why didn't they stick to the motion captured animations of CoD4? The animation in the WaW MP totally sucks, it looks like these animations are directly imported from CoD3. If Treyarch is using the CoD4 engine why didn't they simply use the animations from this engine and put some WWII uniforms on them? This is really something that drives me nuts, couldn't believe it when I first played the beta.
