Sony celebrates PS3 Platinum range success

UK product team ‘delighted’ with initial sales performance

Sony is delighted at the success of its debut PS3 Platinum range, and the platform holder is already gearing up for its second batch of releases.

The first games to receive the £19.99 Platinum treatment included first party titles Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank and Resistance Fall of Man, along with Ubisoft release Assassin’s Creed. And Sony’s Platinum product manager Phil Lynch has highlighted retail as the driving force behind the range’s success.

“We are delighted with the response to the Platinum campaign from consumers and retail partners alike,” he said.

“With Platinum ranges already established on PS2 and PSP, the addition of a PS3 range has been very well supported at bricks and mortar retail with dedicated Platinum bays in-store. And on our online retail partners’ sites, many have created dedicated channels to make it easy for consumers to find them.”

“A game becomes Platinum whenever it sells more than 400,000 units in the PAL territories,” he continued.

“For consumers, it’s a great reference and a good seal of approval. This is especially useful for the gifting market, as there is so much choice these days within the range. The iconic yellow stands out and the buyer knows that the game has already been enjoyed by several hundred thousands of other gamers.”

Not so sure about that! The Platinum packaging for the PS3 is really quite horrible. I know I actually went hunting specifically for an original edition copy of Uncharted becasue I didn't want *yellow* making my games collection look nasty.

What was wrong with the original, er, Platinum colour?

I agree. I don't like this new design. Why couldn't they just have a similar design to the two previous generations?

Here here!! The yellow banner reminds me of a supermarket value item. Bring pack the original!

Ya that Yellow really isn't that attractive but here in America they have taken the Normal Clear PS3 Case and made it a very deep red. If they had looked like what HD-DVD cases had looked like with a red case but not such a deep red and rather a clear red I think it would have been a whole lot better. Instead though they look like someone took a Normal Clear PS3 case and colored it in with a red crayon.

Wolf26pack, you are right...America Does have it worse. i wouldnt mind if it had the little red Greatest hits tab ONLY rather than have a sub-par red case. hell, if the cases were Blue like the Blu-ray films, i think that would please a lot of people
