ELSPA reveals plans to introduce ‘traffic light’ system for video games at retail
Industry trade body ELSPA has unveiled a brand new traffic lights rating system to clear up consumer confusion at retail. Designed to give an ‘at a glance’ guide to the content of video games, the system will categorise games according to five levels of content.
In similarities to ratings currently used in food packaging, the system is designed to improve customer understanding of game content following criticisms made in the Byron report earlier this year that understanding of PEGI symbols is poor amongst consumers.
ELSPA hopes the traffic light ratings will help combat that customer uncertainty ahead of the end of the government’s consultation process into video games ratings on November 20th.

How simple does it need to be?
The PEGI age ratings on pretty much EVERY game aren't obvious enough? If a game says 16+ or whatever on the box then that pretty much means it's not suitable for 12 year old spoilt brats...
What next? White boxes, with the game title in black and a huge number taking up the rest of the case?
Re: How simple does it need to be?
@1: Yes this is the standard for *video* games. But the standard for Games (board games and the like) is: 8+ means it would be too *difficult* for those under 8. Hence the confusion little old ladies find when buying games for little Timmy. "It says 16+ on the box, but little Timmy is really good at Games so I am sure he will find Kill, Kill, Rampant Sex Slaves II, easy enough". Sad but true.
Re: Re: How simple does it need to be?
@2: Then that's the little old ladies' problem, not the games industry's or the retailer.
Video games aren't board games, and should not be treated as such. If people to treat them the same, then they are the ones who will have to deal with it.
First thoughts...
A bit simple.... but I like it.
Re: First thoughts...
The simpler the better. It works for Films, it should work for games.
Re: Re: First thoughts...
Just hand it over to the BBFC already (which admittedly needs an overhaul and expansion). PEGI is toothless and therefore pointless as it can never be given a legal basis, being pan European (well unless Brussels suddenly takes over the criminal justice systems of all member countries anyway). From a wholly British point of view the PEGI system does not match British sensibilities.
Oh and the new rating suggests my game might have too high a fat content and far too much sugar.
Re: Re: Re: First thoughts...
The age rating system is at the retailers and parents responsibility. As the retailers presumably Game excluded, have suffice staff training, the parents will never care about what little jonny is playing as long as the parents have that quiet time .. to drink bicardi and have cigarette,.. it's my given right to swear perfusily whilst playing gta online! if there's minors there then it's tough #$%&@ luck! Dont play an adults game if your not an adult
Re: Re: Re: Re: First thoughts...
Little Timmy and little Johnny as mentioned in posts 2 and 7 must be little psychos by now. They always seem to be playing games they shouldn't........ maybe i'll report them to the daily mail. And anyway where can i buy 'Kill, kill rampant sex slaves 2' or has it been Condemned two obscurity due to its content???
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: First thoughts...
It's out Friday 7th November and has been given an ELSPA rating of "7 - General viewing" - Little Bobby will be pleased. Sicko.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: First thoughts...
If ever ELSPA wanted to endorse the BBFC system then this is it......they've handed UK ratings to the BBFC on a plate.....genius...NOT!!
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: First thoughts...
Even if games are not handed over to the BBFC in full, it would be much better to simply follow the same guidance system. The confusion from customers arises as they are simply used to the BBFC system, and anything else just doesn't register. As has been commented, retailers have their staff well trained (99% of the time anyway) on this issue, many including ourselves treat ELSPA and PEGI ratings as legally binding as BBFC ratings.
I can see where they are going with the new traffic light scheme, but the visibility of the certification was never the issue
