NPD survey analyses gamer’s habits; 54 per cent sell or trade in old titles
A survey from North American gaming stats firm NPD has unveiled a number of interesting insights into the habits of gamers – including the fact that 11 per cent of gamers have titles on the shelf that are yet to be played.
Gamasutra reports that the survey, which was compiled by the Content Delivery and Storage Association and the Entertainment Merchants Association, polled 562 gamers who have all bought disc-based games in the last six months.
Other findings include the fact that 88 per cent of gamers keep their titles in their original casing whilst eight per cent store the discs separately from the cases. Five per cent throw out the packaging altogether.
Once a game is done with, 54 per cent of those polled said they would sell or trade-in a title. Amazingly, two per cent claimed to throw away unwanted games.
“In packaged home entertainment, consumers view the packaging cases as part of the product and not something to be tossed," EMA CEO and president Bo Andersen stated. “The cases provide product protection, allow easy title identification, and carry the artwork that is integral to the consumer’s association with the title.”

Sounds about right
I still have a dreamcast game I've never played. Just didn't get round to it. I also have Mass effect sitting on the shelf. Never found time to play it, then the price plummeted and there was no reason to sell it. Oh and Tomb Raider Anniversary hasn't come out of its shiny wrapper yet either. Wow, I may have become a casual gamer without realising it.
Re: Sounds about right
I have some games I have to almost look at. Spiderman 3 and Eternal Sonata on 360 have yet to get a look at my console even though I've had them for months. At times you buy a few games together... Then you end up only playing one and leaving the others sitting waiting for there time to shine. I know I will eventually play them but when you've got great games coming out on a weekly basis it's hard to do. This week alone I'm fighting with myself on whether I should play Fable II or Dead Space... and with Fallout 3 and Manhunt 2 out on Friday GOW2 not soon after it's going to be a busy Xmas!!!
Re: Re: Sounds about right
I can top that - I've bought Okami twice now (PS2 and the Wii version) and I have both of them sitting on my shelf unplayed.
One day I will get around to it, I promise...
Re: Re: Re: Sounds about right
The question publishers should now be asking themselves is: if they go "all-digital", and do away with boxed products, what proportion of these people will continue to buy games at the same frequency, knowing they can't sell or trade them in...?
Re: Re: Re: Re: Sounds about right
Well it's all good still, regardless if people don't play it, the title has been sold. I, myself am a player/collector, i play wen i have the time, simple as really.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Sounds about right
Glad it's not just me. Maybe I'll find time for my older unplayed/unfinished games during my Xmas holidays, although there are too many awesome new games coming out right now...

I've got FIVE copies of Chronicles of Riddick unopened, due to me pre-ordering one at launch, getting lost in the post, then they just sent loads my way.
Still in their wrappers too, i'd sell them, but they're worth naff all now, so I might as well keep them and boast to people I own five copies of Chronicles of Riddick.
Not that it's gonna get me laid.

You never know :)
I still have CoD 4 on DS unopened. And GTA4 on PS3... But that's maybe because I don't own a PS3 yet :(
Re: :)
I am in the same situation.
I think games need to be shorter, and more episodic. Then you will be able to play a game or two every week, and have them finished by the next week's release! Plus this would make it easier for developers...
Re: Re: :)
I can honestly say I haven't got a single game unplayed. Even if I buy 2 or more games on the same day, I will still play them all that day. I couldn't imagine buying a game and not playing it. I suppose it's the same as I can't imagine a day going by without playing a game though.
Maybe it's the influx of "casual" gamers who buy for buying's sake, rather than playing's sake.
