UK boss David Yarnton promises that format holder hasn't lost its passion for hardcore sector
General Manager of Nintendo UK David Yarnton has told MCV that the platform holder has “never lost its passion for core gamers”.
Speaking in an exclusive interview in this week’s MCV magazine – which hits desks tomorrow – Yarnton reassured fans that new ‘hardcore’ Nintendo games were being developed.
When asked how he responded to critics’ suggestions that Nintendo didn’t have enough games for the hardcore, Yarnton replied:
“It’s simply not true, Nintendo has never lost its passion for core gamers. Nintendo would like to bring smiles to as many different faces as possible and produce games which appeal to mainstream and gaming audiences worldwide.
“We have never neglected core gamers. We still have developers working on popular core gaming franchises but we need longer to complete these games, approximately two to three years.

“These games aren’t ready to launch – but are being worked on by all development teams.
“Recently launched popular Nintendo gaming franchises have included Super Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Kart Wii and Wario Land: Shake Dimension. There is also a vast array of third party core gaming titles available for the Wii console.”

So... nothing to announce to back that up, then?
Re: Prove it

oh right.. disaster day of crisis too.. look around mon ami...
Re: Re: Prove it
I actually think Nintendo did a pretty good job of getting most of their main core franchises represented on the Wii in the first year to 18 months of its life. Sure, there was a lull right after launch, but once Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 arrived, things were good.
What's disappointing now if that Nintendo's holiday season lineup is so focussed on the casual gamer side - Wii Music and Animal Crossing seem to be the lead titles. Perhaps the timing could have been better and things spread out a bit more, but then I'm sure that would have caused just as many complaints.
Also, you can't hold Nintendo entirely responsible for glut of minigames and lack of quality third party stuff.

Stop calling MKW a "core game". It's not. And, FYI, you don't get to decided what is and isn't a real game. We do.
Re: For the love of God and all that is good...
what if nintendo fell out the race rather than sega,.. would we've still had to have waited almost 20yrs for golden axe to be revamped..? i for one would sooner have half a dozen different versions of said game than over a dozen versions of Super Smash, mario party and poke'mon. nintendo never had a core to begin with, just a long string of good 'Fads'
Re: Re: For the love of God and all that is good...
What is a Core Game? What is a Casual Game? The definitions are hazy.
Both can be replayed. Both can be played by anyone.
A casual game is one you can pick up, play for five to ten minutes and then put down. A core game is one that you sit down to play, and just cannot bring yourself to stop. The story is so entrancing, the controls so spot on, the action so right. Twilight Princess was a Core game. Metroid Prime 3 was a Core game.
Mario Kart Wii? That's a casual game. Wii Music, Wii Sports, also both casual games.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Casual? Yes. Core? Yes. Because you can pick it up, play for five minutes, then walk away. Or you can sit and play for hours and not want to give it up.
We aren't asking that everything be an epic adventure on the scale of Twilight Princess. We love Brawl because we can play it both ways. We want something that maintains it's appeal while we wait for the killer franchises to come back.
We don't mind waiting for the epic games, but if you don't show us what you're up to, we can't be excited about them.

@ 6 well said.

Nintendo never abandoned core gamers. Core gamers just got pissier, whinier, wimpier, paranoid, etc.
