PETA successfully campaigns to get publisher to remove online ad using chimpanzee
Japanese games publisher Sega has pulled an online ad for its Wii rhythm-action title Samba De Amigo following a successful campaign from animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).
PETA’s blog reads: “We're officially bananas about Sega. In fact, we're sending them a thank-you card and little vegan chocolates in the shape of monkeys as I write this. Why is this gaming giant scoring such a sweet treat? After learning that Sega used a real chimpanzee in an online video promoting Samba De Amigo we contacted the company.
“We explained how involuntary chimpanzee ‘actors’ are taken away from their mothers when they are just a year or so old and forced to perform confusing and repetitious tricks. We also explained some of the horrible methods that chimpanzee ‘trainers’ use, such as electric shocks with shock collars and prods, isolation, beatings with sawed-off pool cues and slapjacks, and food deprivation.
“Faster than you can mangle a Metallica song on Guitar Hero, Sega pulled the video from its site and promised to keep all great apes out of its ads. Please join me in giving Sega two opposable thumbs up for making the compassionate decision to keep great apes out of the act.”

Thank You
I would like to THANK sega as a big company, that shows that it respects the views of people outside the gaming world. I have always been a BIG sega fan, and will continue to buy their games etc. Lets hope that other company's follow suit, also well done to PETA for a successfull campaign.
Load of rubbish
Now i'm a real Sega Fan.. I've bought and played their games for over 20 years, and this is a joke.. So now its non PC to use animals in adverts!
Give me a break.. I hope they spray paint a hedgehog blue for the new Sonic ads!
Re: Load of rubbish
Im split on this one.
I dont think any animal should be subject to any harm or torture for our own entertainment or marketing campaigns etc however, that advert was wicked!!
The way he storms the house swinging those maracas around......man, it might be cruel but he looked like he was properly having it!!!
Sorry if that offends anyone.....
Re: Re: Load of rubbish
@ Panty Thief
No, I'm not offended. Alway's been a huge fan of acting Apes!
They makes a nice change to dancing Bears anyway.
For the sake of the industry, let's hope PETA never find out about the 1000's of puppies that had to endure countless hours over-heating in MOCAP suits to make all those countless dual-screen canine sims!
All these animals should be celebrated for their sacrifice to their art, not humiliated by having their best scenes cut by the PC brigade! What would Cheetah say?
