R4 cards don’t work on DSi

Infamous piracy tool rendered incompatible with redesigned Nintendo handheld

It has emerged that the R4 card, a SD-card based device that allows DS owners to play pirated and homebrew software on their Nintendo handhelds, does not work with the upcoming DSi.

Though there has been no confirmation, it is likely that the move was a deliberate one from Nintendo. The platform holder has previously moved to block region-lock breaking software from working with its Wii console via a downloadable system update.

The R4 has caused plenty of outrage in recent times, with ELSPA speaking publicly and Nintendo taking legal action against retailers,. Indeed, UK retail en masse has condemned the sale of the device.

"The R4 has caused plenty of outrage in recent times, with ELSPA speaking publicly and Nintendo taking legal action against retailers,. "

So the 241 R4 references on Amazon.co.uk must have their respective marketplace sellers quaking in their boots, come on Amazon, get it sorted!

I still maintian if the games themselves were a sensible price for the DS then no one would bother with the R4 cards anyway. Thats what Nintendo need to sort out. Any more then £15 for a DS game is an absolute rip off.
Seriously taking this course of action how long do they think it will be until there is an R4i card on the market !!!!!!
Nip it in the bud - bring the games to a reasonable price and it will stop the purchase of R4 cards altogether

@4

but as we know despite you wanting to live in a perfect world its never going to happen. SORRY

The solution above was a sensible one for the fact its a realistic way to solve the problem for good. I don't agree with the use of the cards but I can sure see the logic in that solution

I'm being a realist from all the times I've purchased new PC games etc for £30+ only to find people I know are playing for free only days after launch. I'll give it a month after release before its hacked and a new card is available.... probably still through Amazon

Amazon... what a joke - sell anything to make a profit at the expense of legit retailers..
Knowingly selling an instrument to pirate games! Thanks for your support of the gaming industry!

The answer is simple, turn off the internet... do that and all the piracy problems will go away. Then we can take all blank DVD's, CD's, Flash media, minidiscs, video tapes etc... out of the shops. The we won't need recorders for anything so we can get rid of them, video cameras, mobile phones... you name it, clear the lot out.

Because as much as everyone gets up in arms over this one small card, they seem to forget everything else that gets pirated. Could that be because the R4 card is something they don't use but MP3's, copied films, downloaded TV shows are things they do? So it's easy to cry foul of people costing them money but it's probably alright for them to cost the other media industries money.

The human race is such a hypocritical collection of do-gooders.

Just wanted to reply to LeeC, I have a DS and dont use an R4 chip, I have a PC and dont use copied games or software, I have an MP3 player and dont use stolen music from the net, I have a DVD player and dont use stolen movies, I have a TV and dont watch downloaded tv shows.

I have work mates and friends who do and any mention of this in a conversation with me and they all know my response. So no need to turn off the net or take blank media out the shops, just use some common sense yourself and try and convince your friends to stop the stealing themselves.

youre all crackers. gamecube failed becuse it was unhackable. do you think it was a coincidence the same crypto was used on the wii even though the cube had finally been hacked? ds is and will be the most successful in no small part because of these cards. If nintendo have radically altered the dsi they will have a dud on their hands, and serve them right for being greedy in that case. i would imagine them to have made a token effort to produce x number of hack free days but that is all.

PS2 best selling console ever. Why? Because it could be hacked. PS3 would sell 10 times better if hackable.

I agree. Strange that no one is admitting that the 360 is doing well, in part, because it is easily hackable....

Piracy is a problem and there will never be a system that stops people producing a "hack". I dont use illegal stuff but i also dont have anything against people that do....its their choice. I believe a major problem is the amount of money that retailers sell the games for.....again I appreciate you need to make a profit but let me show you a few examples of how they overcharge in the first place..

1. new game in one high street store was £30
2. same new game in other high street shop £15.99 already big savings
3. same game on legit ebay uk shop £13.99..... seeing a trend?
4. not wanting to use the pirate r4 i found the same game in an on-line shop in US for $5.99!!!!! with $5 postage. works out about £8 and was delivered in 3 working days!

The shop in the US and the cheapest high street store must surely be making a healthy profit even at that price or they wouldnt do it. Draw your own conclusions from what i have shown and even give me some grief, but i always take some retailers comments with a pinch of salt when they say they are going to go out of business even though they charge up to 6 times the price of the cheapest competitor in the first place! ....thanks for your patients so far but.....it always seems to be the companies that rake in 10's of millions in profit that are the biggest whingers! So, big companies...help yourselves buy helping the legitimate customers that keep you in business in the first place.......lower your prices!

How long is it before they create pirite/illegal software for the DSi?
No time. Nintendo should make thier own version of the R4 card. That way people don't have to pay extortionate prices for games that sometimes arn't that good!

People with R4 cards currently are not gonna buy the Dsi.

Nintendo should think about what they are doing to parents just after christmas and in a time of ressesion bring a new Ds model out, especially when the DS Lite Red, Green has just been released.

Cards for DSi are already available and been sold in U.K and rest of the world.
ELSPA are claiming these cards are illegal and customs are seizing such cards they detect entering U.K under intellectual property, design and patent infringement, but due to the huge amounts coming into U.K, the majority slip through customs net.
However, if as ELSPA claim, they were illegal to sell once in the U.K, how come that trading standards are powerless to seize these cards, as my local trading standards informed me recently???
Its all as clear as mud!!

If you feel DS software is too pricey..get a better paying job or find a cheaper hobby. i'd prefer to own originals games over downloaded versions..adds more value and appreciation to what you are playing!

why are all you people who don't pirate any of your media reading things to find out if the r4 is compatible with the new dsi?

you don't have to stick your nose into things that bother you.. stop bitching and go watch the movies that you had to get a better paying job to afford.

DSi & R4

I have 2 children both with a DS & R4, now there is 5 year difference between them & they play mostly the same games so if each time they wanted a new game I’m looking at £60 on average for 2 copies, the R4 has made cheap gaming possible. Between them they have 45 original DS games as when they have found a game they like I will go and buy it. They use the R4 as a platform to see how good a game is like downloading the demos on XBL you use them to see if it really is worth money.

On the 3rd of April I picked up 2 DSi for them this was before I new the R4 did not work with it. On the 5th of April I took them back and got my £300 back Nintendo’s loss. I will buy them a DSi but only when the R4 or it’s equivalent is released.

i would have bought a NDsI if it had something like the r4 already integrated into it.
I'm not that good at keeping up with little things like the nds games so i have bought multiple copy's of some of my games. I also hate going from store to store looking for one game (and never finding it) and only to find out it sucks

Nintedo would make more money by making full games download able at a low price
This would cut production costs for the Nintendo company, also less landfills
