Xbox 360 boasts best attach rate

Study claims that 360 owners boast over eight games each, with PS3 and Wii owners just over five

A new analytical study from Gamastutra claims that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 boasts the current highest attach rate of all the next generation consoles – though Nintendo can lay claim to having the highest first party software attach rate.

The numbers show that the Xbox 360 can currently claim a ratio of 8.1 games per machine, though of course Microsoft’s machine has had longer on the market. The PS3 and Wii, in contrast, claim ratios of 5.3 and 5.5 respectively.

In first party terms, however, Nintendo rules the roost with an attachment rate of 2.4. Microsoft ratio is 1.4 and Sony’s 0.9.

Effect of time on the market

Surely the amount of time effects the attachment rate; the extra 12 months will push the attach rate on the 360 higher.

The wii and ps3 have both been out 24 months and are pretty much the same. The 360 has been out 50% longer and has an attach rate just over 50% higher.

Sounds about even to me.

I'd like to know what the attach rate was of the 360 at the same time the PS3 and Wii have been out now. Probably the same or a little more.

Microsoft also pointed out that, at 6.9 games sold per console, Xbox 360 breaks the games attach record.

...Microsoft said that Xbox 360 software generated $367 million ... Xbox 360's software attach rate was 6.9.

Fast foward to January 8th 2008 ...

...Xbox boss Peter Moore says that the Xbox 360 enjoys a software attach rate of 5.3 units per console ...

Perhaps the jump in sales of consoles over the holidays changes attatch rates? This number may not mean much if things such as quick sales of a console so drastically effect the attatch rate.

JD over a comparable period of time post release, PS3 attach rate was at 5.3, Wii was 5.5, and 360 at 6.6. Check out gamasutra, they just wrote about this. 360's attach rate isn't 50% higher now, its closer to 65% higher, and these numbers are not including games purchased online.
