US: Microsoft celebrates triple success

Xbox 360 betters PS3 by nearly 2:1; Fable II dominates software rankings and Gears of War 2 boasts strong debut

Microsoft has come out with its chest beating after a solid hardware sales victory over PS3 and a commanding performance from monthly software chart topper Fable II in the NPD October US sales figures.

The firm confirmed that Lionhead’s expansive RPG Fable II has sold more than 1.5 million units worldwide in its first two weeks on sale, making it the fastest selling RPG on Xbox 360. In addition, in under a week Epic’s Xbox 360 exclusive Gears of War 2 has sold two million copies globally.

“October NPD numbers show a record software attach rate of 8.1 and industry leading software spend reaching $244 million this month on the Xbox 360, thanks to a slew of new titles,” a statement from the platform holder read.

“Third party publishers helped Xbox 360 reach $171 million on third party game spend in October, further boosting Xbox 360’s total third party game sales this generation to $4.5 billion, or a 57 per cent share.”
