Takeover specialist Hilco could acquire troubled retailer for nominal fee
The Woolworths Group has confirmed that it is in talks over a possible sale of its retail business.
The firm has not identified potential bidders, but The Times reports that it is considering a sale to turnaround specialist Hilco for a nominal £1.
Woolworths, which has been on the High Street for 100 years, has suffered badly at the hands of the economic slowdown – causing subsidiary EUK problems of its own.
Woolworths shares have fallen 83 per cent over the past year. In September it suspended its dividend payments and reported a record six-month loss of £100m.
In August it rejected a takeover bid for its 815 stores from a group headed by the founder of the Iceland frozen food chain.

It paid its Q3 mortgage fee in October. Its Q4 payment is due at the end of December.

Can someone lend me 50p?
Ill buy it for £2
But can i wait til after the Q4 mortgage fee is paid please?
So, wait a minute, i cant get a pick and mix for less than a pound but i can buy the whole store group for that. (i know the several million pound of debt and running costs offers it as a slightly less attractive proposition than a bag full of fizzy cola bottles)
waiting for a stock clearance
I love fizzy cola bottles

Lets get all indies to club together & buy it just for a laugh
Re: calling all indies
Let's hope this has no negative effect upon that beloved middle man set up Entertainment UK...or their ability to pay bills....not sure quite how far that pound will go..?
Saw it coming.
It's not as if they're going to suddenly disappear from the landscape is it?
Quite honestly though - and I hate to say it of one of our bricks and mortar bredrin - WHSmiths, Woolies, British Home Stores, et al all lack identity to retain customers.
In my opinion they need to find a hook like M&S for geriatric yummy mummies and people who like pornographic food.
Re: Saw it coming.
@ Koti - lol... So true.
Or Woolies should copy the M&S ads and have really hot models prancing around in their smalls pillow fighting next to the pick and mix...
fingers crossed
well i cant say im suprised, and they only have themselves to blame, you cant sell lost leaders for years and expect to make profits on all other items, i just hope if the iceland group take over we dont have more adverts with that terrible blonde women in it, and now they have got jason donavon involved, errrr horrible
CALL ME STUPID
Call me stupid but are we not in business to make money.
Is profit not the very life blood of a business. For the past 6 months Woolies have been selling games at RRP £49.99 for £37.99 and wonder why profits are low!!
HELLOOO !!!!!! Can someone from woolies or someone much cleverer than me explain this please as I must but stupidly looking at the obvious.
No surprise
Let's face it - woolies have been struggling for years! Last time I visited a woolies I thought I was at a jumble sale! The shopping experience was not good. The stores need updating and the ranges need to be dragged into the 21st Centaury or they will end up like WH Smiths !!
Re: CALL ME STUPID
entertainment items are a loss for retailers such as woolies, it is entirely a 'footfall driver' to get customers in the door, they expect these customers to get an additional purchase, but there is nothing to buy as woolies has refused to take gaming as far as it should.woolies only makes profit on about 30% of its stock and thats terrible, the only people to blame are the inexperienced uni grads that go straight in a job they know nothing off.
Re: CALL ME STUPID
@10
Selling an RRP £49.99 game at £37.99 is not selling at a loss, but significantly decreasing the margin. Large retailers like Woolies, Game, HMV, Zavvi et al would not sell anything in any volume if they went full RRP. e.g.On Xbox 360, although most titles still have an RRP of £49.99, you're unlikely to sell many at that price as any title on 360 looks expensive if it's over £39.99. Large retailers make up their profits by selling in volume, and only rarely sell at a loss. Often when you see crazy prices at these retailers, it's because they've been given funded support by the supplier to allow them to sell at a loss and retain margin.
Supermarkets sell at a loss as it increases footfall through the store, and ups the average basket spend that is supplemented by high margin groceries.
Hope that helps!
Oh, and I'm not sure Woolies problems have been caused by Games which is one of the few growing entertainment markets, but most likely the losses made in the rest of the business - clothes/homewhere/gardening/toys etc.
Re: Re: CALL ME STUPID
Shopping at Woolies is an awful experience. Thats probably why they are going belly up. Poor service, crap selection, over priced and cramped. Its a dump
I think it's obvious...
It's because that stores like Woolworths lack a solid identity and do not generate customer bases that they solely rely on lazy price cutting - and that is why they're struggling.
I don't think I'm being big headed when I say I'd love to get my hands on their entertainment department as it would only take a few good ideas to take them to the kind of numbers and heights enjoyed by Argos, Asda and Tesco.
Sorry - yes - blatent self promotion. [no pun intended]
Re: I think it's obvious...
Mate of mine works in the merchandising department.
Writings been on the wall for the past two years to be honest. Flogging the 360 cheap was all aprt of them flogging of their old stock and paying their suppliers fees, Upper-management have been purposely running it down, if someone tried to make a concerted effort to solve the too far gone problem, they would be seen as being responsible for the problem, so no one stepped forward, and here we are.
He's already been looking for work, drafting his CV lol.

well i think this industry needs some stability, offers here and there are fine, but when companies offer obvious lost leaders like cod5 for £27 this just damages the industry, as everyone thinks this price should be the norm, im struggling and worry about my store, but woolworths only have themselves to blame,i hope they get what they deserve, and now argos are selling all games half price, i think there could be alot of people down the job centre come january, and its really not necessary, everyone can make money, why make so many aggressive sales moves?? it cant be sustained long term
Re: hmnmm
loss leader, not lost - silly!! If you don't know ocncepts like RRP and loss leader then no wonder you are worried about your store!!
