Nickelback slam Guitar Hero

‘Rock Star’ combo blame rhythm action titles for lack of new US bands

Cheesy Canadian rockers Nickelback have blamed games such as Guitar Hero for reducing the number of new bands emerging in America.

The band’s frontman Chad Kroeger says young people are more interested in playing music simulation games than learning real instruments.

He told MTV: "I feel like there's not enough rock bands out there, especially when we go on the road.

"It's tough to find other bands out there, because either they're making a record, or they just got done touring. So kids, start rock bands. Set down the 'Guitar Hero,' learn how to play an actual guitar and start a band, because it's hard to find more bands to put a solid rock and roll package together, to get out there."

I doubt they would turn down royalites if they were included in GH or RB.

I'm sure there are plenty of kids that try to learn a real guitar becuase of the music games.

@1 - You're prob right, but I doubt they'll jump on the bandwagon now, after saying that.

@2 - You may not like them, but you can't take anything away from them. They're good musicians and they've made something of themselves.

US Rockers?

First of all, NICKELBACK are not rockers.

Secundo, I'm not proud of that, but they are not from US, they are Canadians.

And finally, they should learn how to play GH first, and then, if they succeed, they could try to do real music, because so far, they have failed. (Hein Faf!)

I hate them.

Ciao!

Chad's wrong. These Rhythm games have only been ultra popular for what, about a year to a year and a half now? Before that they had their following but it wasn't as widespread. Frankly it would take a lot longer than that for those games to actually have that kind of an impact.

Also, what about the kids who do pick up a real guitar (drums, etc...) because of their experience with these games? I know I've been (and still am) stongly tempted.

Maybe Nickleback is only having a hard time finding bands to tour with because no one wants to tour with them.

He's got a point though. Why bother learning to get really good at Guitar Hero, just learn the actual instrument. Never really understood the appeal of standing with a tiny toy guitar pressing colored buttons.

Nickelback may not be everybodies favourite band, but the facts are they have done well, they're 6 albums released now, how many of the people commenting above can say they have that. Some people obviously like them including myself. I saw them live a few months ago, the drummer done one of the best drum solos I've ever seen. I have seem Metallica, Slipknot, Trivium among others and it was possibly the best drum solo! The rest of the gig was good too!

In regards what they're saying I don't fully believe it, I think if anything GH and RB are promoting people wanting to go out and start learning an instrument. People are made to feel like rock legends while playing these and it makes them want to replicate it in real life, I know many people who have started playing guitar over the last few years because of GH.

Now he wants talented rock bands? Pff, keep searching.

@ Me! (post 12)

Glad you enjoyed the drum solo. Their drummer, I think Daniel Adair (or something like that), plays some pretty cool.

You wanna see real drum solo's check out the like of Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd, Thomsa Lang, John Blackwell, Benny Grebb etc...

I love the games, I don't own any of them, but they're fun. If you're tempted to learn an instrument, my advice is do it, make it your new year resolution or something, you'll be amazed at how fulfilling it is if you stick it out...!

This article is one of the worst news articles i have ever seen in my life. First it starts off with "cheesy canadian rockers" which completely shows your biased against Nickelback. Being a journalist myself this is completey stupid, bias is not supposed to come into play.
Second he said nothing against guitar hero AT ALL. All he said was "its harder to get bands going because they are playin guitar hero, since its easier" and thats bashing guitar hero how?
Sorry to say it but Nickelback is one of the more succesful bands out there right now and they dont get their by sucking. If they sucked then they would still be releasing underground music. Plus he is right, kids are thinking to themselves "this is fun but im not gonna learn how to play guitar its too hard" and not everyone is like this but alot are.
We are lacking good bands too. What do we have these days? Horrible crap called Fall out Boy everywhere, god bring back the 90's PLEASE! If Nickelback wants a good show they need to be like MEtallica and pick up some good sounding underground bands. Lets not forget it takes searching these days because every young band, usually teens, all sound like the emo crap we have today and im sorry that is not talent AT ALL. Get a better singer, learn to play rock music, and figure out how to use the whole guitar.
I support what Nickelback said, love them or hate them. I dont support this article, completely biased and poorly written....

I get a kick out of all the people talking about how good Nickelback are and using their album sales for the reason. By this logic Britney spears, Soulja boy, and Lil Wayne are incredible. Popularity does not equal quality. The sad truth is that the majority of the population are just taking up space on the planet and have no clue about anything, especially music.

Nickelback have 0 artistic merit as musicians. Being able to play an instrument does not make you a good writer. Nickelback would be much better if they were a cover band.

@21, since when has XBox been the only home of GH, RB etc...?

I guess you can see the tag that's now labelled yourself with eh? Oh the constant irony of people like this, you just have to laugh.

@11, I guess that's why so many Americans shoot each other eh? Why bother learning to shoot guns in a game when you can just kill real people... And while we're at it, next time you're walking down the street and see a car you like... you get the point?

Has the concept of "Video Games" been totally lost on some people?

Maybe Chad is bitter because, what games like GH and RB do is introduce people to bands they might never have heard of before. And maybe, just maybe, because NB aren't one of those bands, he's just a bit jealous of the exposure some of these bands are getting.

Kids these days are being drummed (pun intended) into getting qualifications, careers, secure jobs for the future. Nobody in their right mind would consider "musician" as one of those, regardless of the type of band. Hence, they play GH for "fun", a radical idea for gaming I know, but there it is.

I kind of agree with Chad. Kids think they're are goddamn legends just 'cause they can play 'Prayer of a Refugee' on Expert. It's kinda sad because they think they can play, and if I gave my guitar to one of these kids, all they'd make is crappy sounds. But at the same time, it may lead gamers to actually learn to play the instrument (as a friend of mine did.)

I agree/disagree w. chad on this, i'm not going to step into his professionalism, or his band's. Chad aint the whole band mind you guys, so stop hating on some talented musicians. And I'll remind you that chad has made some music w. people such as Carlos Santana... go ahead hate haha. GH and RB are great fun, and wouldn't you know those games actually inspired me to get off my ass, stop playing the games, and learn to play the real thing. I'm going on 6 months now of learning. However, a buddy of mine stopped playing his guitar cuz of these games, cuz he got sick and tired of trying to start bands that failed and figured to heck w. it I'll just live out my dream in a video game. So yes, and no, these games do impact people greatly both in good and bad ways but... lets not forget that these games have made people who play them aware of the fact that there are many different components to a song, singing, base, drums, rythm guitar, lead guitar etc... for starters. So bringing music awareness to people is always a great thing. my nonsensical 2 cents. BTW, stop hating fags. Love how people are such critics and experts on a topic when... I'm sorry I haven't ever seen any of your music videos, oh do you even know how to play a musical instrument? STFU. Art is art, create it or stfu about it.

Iknow this thread is uber old, but my god how ignorant some people are. Like or loathe nickelbacks music, no-one on this forum has the right to say they have no artistic merit, the fact that they have 10's of millions of people who thoroughly love their music DOES mean a lot. And compared to perhaps you and your mum elmarko that love your music, i think that proves who the real loser is.
Stop complaining about bands who have made it and perhaps grow some balls and try to make it yourself.
