Microsoft: We’re beating PS3 in Europe

Microsoft: We’re beating PS3 in Europe

Platform holder claims victory as it boasts of generating ‘double’ rival's UK sales since September

After revealing that Xbox 360 had topped the seven million sales mark in Europe, Microsoft has claimed that the console is outselling PS3 – both in the UK and across the continent.

The firm told MCV this week that the combination of Xbox 360’s September price cut and blanket Q4 marketing had helped the console begin to beat PS3 in European “swing states” in which it had traditionally struggled.

September’s price drop saw the 360 Arcade SKU reduced to just £129.99, and it’s mid-range 60GB Pro cut to £169.99. The Xbox 360 Elite, which comes with a 120GB hard drive, was dropped to £229.99.

European interactive entertainment boss Chris Lewis told MCV: “We don’t fixate on the competition, but it’s a very important bellwether of our success. In the UK, we’ve sold more than double PS3’s volume since the price drop in September.

“I would call out our success in the Mediterranean countries in the last few weeks as a genuine step change from where we’ve been. The investment we’ve made in the right campaigns, the right price point and content that truly appeals to those markets.

“In Italy, we were double PS3’s sales last week. In France and Germany we are at or better than PS3 consistently now. We dominate in Russia and the Nordic countries and in Spain – a traditional Sony stronghold – we’re now outselling PS3. It bodes incredibly well for our Christmas prospects."

Yeah...since Septemeber. They certainly arent beating Sonys HUGE success in Europe though.

Sony is much further ahead of Microsoft in conquering Europe and according to NPD, there is only a couple of thousound unit difference between both of them in Microsofts home country!!

You cant blam Microsoft for trying to spin though.

Don't fixate on the competition? Rubbish. Everyday Microsoft say something about how they are beating PS3 in some way or another.
As a reader of all gaming news, unbiased player and someone working in marketing, it gets very tedious. Effective PR should at least be accurate.
But the latest statement is nearly as good as the one about how they lead and don't copy others, when they so obviously have....

Hello - 360 has been available for longer so you would expect it to be ahead. Let's see at the end of the life cycle who has sold the most units. I suspect Sony will come out top in Europe.

When Sony says the PS3 is beating the Xbox 360 in Europe, wich is not true, you can expect Microsoft saying the contrary a few days or weeks later. It's a little PR game and it won't change soon, we all know that Sony is Microsoft target for this generation.

Until Microsoft start knocking the faulty units returned off their sales numbers (1 sold, returned faulty, another sold out to replace = 2 sold?) I will take it all with a pinch of salt. And before the fanboy monkeys come out with the "they don't go wrong anymore" crap, I run a multi-million pound games retail store, yes they do.

Russia is still Sonyland.
I bet MS is leading in many aspects as advericment and XBox360 promotion but the main reason people buys XBox360 - is low antipiracy efforts. In other words people buys XBox 360 because of pirate disk costs approx $10, while licensed one - $80
You may always check the game sales list at http://www.gamepar....html - one of the largest console games кефшд network in Moscow.

The title is wrong, PS3 has has sold more than Xbox 360 in total and has been on the market LESS than half the time. Also, where are MS getting their figures, I hope they are counting shipped ...

A couple of good sales weeks won't do much, the USA is MS only viable market and the spin reeks of desperation.

PS3 still beats x360 in PAL region when u consider middle east and other territories

MS is having a fire sale on x360 which costs 1/3 as a ps3 in europe.

However for MS competition will be over when PS3's price drops to 250 pounds or 300 euro

If you really "run a multi-million pound games retail store" you'd know that NPD figures are for units sold at retail and are not effected by consoles repaired or replaced by MS, and since they are covered for 3 years, the warranty is only just up for the launch models, nice try though fanboy.

The PS3 is lyk twice the price of a 360, so if 360s aren't selling twice as much, then isn't there something wrong with it? If PS3s could cut down costs to sell at that price, I don't think you'd see as bigger 360 sales...

@11

Many people out there get RROD and instead of sending it back to MS for repair in the 3 year warranty, they buy another 360, how can you possibly blame MS for that...?

Back to the more related topic, Sony will sell more consoles in Europe than the Xbox 360, Sony have a loyal fan base in Europe as a whole, although the Xbox 360 holds the UK market. I still believe it will be reasonably close, having said that, before the Xbox 360's latest price cuts I would have said Sony will sell millions more than MS in Europe.

However I believe that any lead Sony take away from Europe will be countered by the US sales. This will be Xbox 360's region, and as a personal belief, it will be by a big margin.

And Japan, this is Sony's region, Although the Xbox 360 has caught up in recent months by a several thousand, it will not come near the PS3 in terms of sales.

No doubt, I think worldwide sales are going to be close between the two. Of course this is just my opinion.
But we all know what is going to rule the roost, and that's the Nintendo Wii, selling like hotcakes to say the least. Although alot will say it's in a completely different market to the other consoles.

Whether their beating Sony or not, you got to hand for MS for at least stepping up this time round. They are obviously here to stay and i think the competition is good. Am I the only one who thought having the PS2 dominate the console market was a bad thing?

i really wouldnt say that, when sony now have the same amount of users playing games on its online service, sure there are people who buy it for a cheaper blu ray player, but that must be such a tiny percentage, its crazy, there wouldnt be any exclussives on ps3 if no one was playing games

Any consoles brought back to our company are stored for replacement by Microsoft, then a new one is sold out and discounted to zero. That means that they are contributing to the NPD sales figures. Unless Microsoft are telling NPD to knock off the faulties, which isn't gonna happen... not to mention the dozens we sell every week to replace faulty machines that are outside of warranty.

I must be one of the thousands (if not millions) who are waiting on the PS3 to take a price cut.
When the price cut comes into place you'll see PS3 sales go through the roof, not only in Europe, but both the US and JPN as well.

Why is everyone so obssessed with what console is: bigger/better/more badass??
I currently own both consoles. I use the 360 for gaming as i think it is far more superior online. And i use the PS3 for blu ray. I quite obviously prefer the 360 as a console but would bever slam Sony as i believe that competition is nescessary.
With both companies becoming more competitive its only good news for the consumer :-) (ie most ppl posting on here)

PS i really do hate all those fanboys that say things like....."blah blah 360 has sold more" or " PS3 is more reliable blah blah"

Sales is about even. And they both DIE.DEAL WITH IT!!

That article claims rough US total sales of
Wii - 14million
360 - 12 million
ps3 6 million

Now take a look at the software units - the 360's is roughly 3 times that of the ps3's, despite "only" having twice the sales - the Wii's is under the 360. You can see why publishers will support the 360, it shifts units.

Wheres the Euro hardware figures, they are a PITA to find...

PS3 has a slightly better tie ratio than 360 in Europe I believe, not sure of the reason for that though.

As for PS3 having sold close to 360 in the US, that is nonsense. 360 has been out for roughly 3 years, PS3 for 2 but there are more than twice as many 360's out there. Sony have only really been competitive with the PS3 this year, 2007 was dire for them in the US.
