PS3 Trophies to be mandatory

Sony will make its Achievement-style system compulsory for developers from January next year

Sony is reportedly to make the inclusion of Trophies, the firm’s answer to Xbox 360’s popular Achievement system, mandatory from January next year, Videogamer reports.

The site claims to have word from an SCEE spokesperson that any titles released from the turn of the year must include the system – at the moment developers have the choice whether to implement them or not.

The number of high-profile releases already supporting Trophies has improved in recent times, with big hitters such as Dead Space, BioShock, Call of Duty: World at War and LittleBigPlanet all including them out of the box.

Some big titles, such as EA’s Burnout Paradise, have also had retrospective Trophy patches released. However, these often require gamers to restart titles from the beginning if they wish to secure their virtual silverware.

It needs to happen, when i buy a game and its on 360 or ps3, i always chose the 360 version for achievements and the much better online feactures. Sony seem to be standing still far too long.

If you find Xbox Live a "poor" service, don't pay for it then. No one is making you Henry. Just play online on your PS3.

You seem to have it in for MS, just from your last few posts on all articles, Why don't you get rid of your Xbox if MS seem to be irritating you quite a bit.

I think this is good for Sony, they need to do this, Although people will say it's pointless anyway, I don't think it is. Alot of gamers like to get some sort of reward for doing certain things in the game, and the fact they are now making this mandatory will make it less confusing for gamers on which games have trophies or not, and it will also give longetivity for all the games.

It's a good thing, a lot of people play Xbox 360 versions of their games rather than PS3 versions, just because of the achievment system.

Taken them long enough

It's taken Sony long enough to realise that those of us with both the 360 and PS3 will buy games for the 360 because of the Achievements - when the gameplay and graphics are pretty much the same, then I'm going to get the one that gives me the "extra".

It's just a pity that it took Sony well over a year to get these in properly, then again, they took that long to get rumble into the pads, which was insane to miss off.

It just seems to me that Sony don't really care that much about their customers, otherwise they'd have pushed these things through as fast as possible to make the system closer to what the gamers actually want, rather than what they will give us.

Why is this being reported now?
They announced this would be the case when the trophy patch was first introduced.

If they do this, then they need to make sure they don't make the same mistake as they did with LBP, that's for sure.

In LBP, they let user created levels earn trophies, so I bet you can all guess what kind of levels people were building... made the whole thing completely pointless in the game.

They need to add them, but then ensure that the only way to earn those trophies, is by developer created content, not user created. Otherwise, they might as well just add an option screen to let you just select the trophies you want.
