New ‘rescue deal’ could save Woolies from administration

Hilco sticks to last week's £1 offer – but will now take on £300m of Woolworths’ debt

The company looking to snap up Woolworths for £1 seems to have revised its deal following emergency talks over the weekend.

According to The Daily Mail, Hilco still wishes to buy Woolies' 840 High Street stores for a nominal £1.

However, the company is thought to have tabled a last-ditch offer to take on up to £300million of debts – leaving lenders saddled with £85 million.

According to The Times, that represents an extra £35 million of debt on Hilco's initial offer.Sources said talks between the parties were 'ongoing'.

Unless a deal can be reached, said the Mail, the group could fall into administration, putting 30,000 jobs at risk.

However, investors in the company have protested against Hilco's £1 offer.

I'm no expert but on the surface looks like a way forward and a deal that should be seriously considered.

I still think there is a place for Woolies in the scheme of things but I feel they need to move with the times and and an image revamp. The whole thing just needs an overhaul and they need to be able to entice customers across the board of varying age groups with the products they sell but for too long it just hasn't happened.

They're still the daddies of Pic and Mix :)

Is the Woolworth's brand really worth taking on that debt?

I NEVER think to go in Woolworths these days, and my visits dropped off just as soon as specialist stores emerged to one by one make each of Woolworth's 'areas' obsolete.

I've noticed a lot of Woolworths adverts on TV of late, it's just a shame they don't have the sense to advertise something other than specific products. They should know by now that each time they spend money to advertise a game, people impressed by the advert go to GAME to buy it.

It's the same with music. Why use your advertising budget to tell people about a product for 15 seconds, so they can go to HMV to buy it?

Perhaps actually incentivising in store would be a better tactic, giving them something decent and Woolworths-specific to spend TV advertising cash on?

I have to argue against them being the daddies of pick n mix, they did used to be. What spoilt it for me is when they stopped the 'all you can shove into a cardboard cup' and opted for the pay by the KG option.

For me, that was the nail in their coffin. In fact, i think it was around the time their financial woh started, coincidence, i think not.

You've got a point there, all got a bit confusing and the first time I went there after they implemented this I must admit I felt a little cheated :)

However the selection of Pick n Mix is still on point.

actually the cups are back now and they are much better than those expensive bags i work in wollies and i weighed a cup and it would normally cost about 6 quid but its only 3 woo bargain
and i reckon woolies should focus on becoming a childrens shop and just sell entertainment, kids clothes toys sweets and ditch all the horrible kitchen and home stuff because noone wants a cheap horrible duvet cover any more when you can get a nice duvet cover from tescos for about the same price etc etc and we sell compost and seeds and have a whole shelf full of cottons and elastic and toilet seats adults don't like woolworths my mum thinks its tacky so
it should concentrate on becoming more of a toy shop
because the majority of people that i serve are parents buying stuff for their kids or kids buying stuff

I think Woolies need to rethink what they actually sell instore, they tried the Big Red Book (what for 2 years).. Keep high shrinkage/low profit stores open.. Too many top dogs getting paid too much! This has been going on makes me wonder why Trevor Bish Jones got out (I take it with a golden hand shake) and his side kick Steve Lewis moved to Euk!!!!!

Rescue deal imminent - £385 million debt, not all that much considering the time of year and the fact they have 820 stores.

From where I'm sitting it just smacks of creditors getting itchy feet.
