PS3 to get 'competitive' pricing in March 2009, claims report

Details from Sony meeting leaked by fansite, which also names new PSP and PS3 games

Sony will drop the European price of the PS3 to make it 'more competitive' in March 2009 according to details supposedly leaked from an internal meeting held at the company last week.

Allegedly, at the 'Sony Computer Entertainment Staff Annual Briefing' held on Friday, SCEE president David Reeves said that his division was the toast of the SCE business due to PlayStation sales, reports fansite DPAD.

The PS3 is outselling the 360 in PAL regions according to Sony data, which means SCEE is making more profit than SCEA or SCEJ. Reeves allegedly said that such strong sales have helped put the games division of Sony back 'in the black'.

So no need for a price cut in the immediate future – but one is pencilled in to make the machine 'more competitive' early next year, in March, as Sony looks to widen the gap between it in the 360, says the report.

It's possible the March date means the price will drop to accompany the release of the long-awaited shooter Killzone 2.

As well as Guerilla’s shooter, it is alleged that both Uncharted 2 and God of War 2 were on display, with the latter already setting the internet alight following claims from original GoW developer David Jaffe that the game is visually “unlike anything you’ve seen before”.

Also touted was the already-speculated PSP version of LittleBigPlanet, along with the surprise news of a PSP outing for Sony IP MotorStorm.

Other snippets from the report include claims that Sony is planning a significant increase to its investment in the PSN network

...hold on... Sony are saying the PS3 is outselling the 360 in PAL regions? Yet Microsoft are saying the Xbox 360 is outselling the PS3 in PAL regions?

So more of the same then. ;-) Dear oh dear.

depends which figures you read well not which figures just depends on what ur comparing them to

the 360 is just about outselling the ps3 on day by day on average and has sold most units in total

BUT! if you compare the amount sold and average units per Quarter since launch the ps3 is actually ahead of the 360

so basically pretend for a minute that the ps3 and the 360 were released on the same day the ps3 would have sold over 3 million more units. its just that simple.

at the end of the day there both great console in there own right and you can debate that unit the end of the world comes for all i care just enjoy the ride competition is good after all.

But comparing Sony and Microsoft figures post PS3 release is also statistically anomalous for the simple reason that a large number of early adopters would have purchased a 360 prior to the release of PS3. Perhaps inevitably, therefore, 360 sales would be lower post PS3 release as we are comparing late adopters with early + late adopters. Thus there is no way of making a meaningful comparison because it relies on counterfactual analysis, addressing the question: if the consoles had been released on the same day which would have sold the most? From my point of view as an owner of both, I would have just brought a 360!

@3 - So just where would you bring this 360?...

Incidentally as a seller and owner of all three major consoles, only the PS3 has been on recently - 100% down to Little Big Planet which is the best game I've ever played. So much so that I've been getting staff to recommend it to anyone that asks for Xmas suggestions.

Back on topic, it would be great to see a price cut for the PS3 soon. It's doing 'quite' well considering the dreaded C word happening at the moment. I don't think the £7 price cut next week due to the VAT change is going to make much difference to people's views so I think a £20 - £50 would be most welcome.
