World of Warcraft drops 32 places as FIFA and Mario Kart return to the Top three

Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty: World at War stands its ground this week at top of the ChartTrack Top 40.

The World War II shooter holds on despite renewed pressure from EA’s critically adored FIFA ’09, which returns to second place. EA also had the highest new entry of the week, with Need for Speed: Undercover racing into fourth spot.

Other new titles breaking into the Charts this week includes Eidos’ Tomb Raider: Underworld in ninth position and Valve’s Left 4 Dead, in at number 15. Meanwhile, Midway’s Mortal Kombat Vs. DC, Microsoft’s Lips and EA’s Rock Band 2 are surprisingly absent from the Top 40.

It hasn’t been a great week for World of Warcraft either, with Wrath of the Lich King falling from second place to 34th.

However, it’s better news for Nintendo’s Wii range, with Mario Kart Wii (third), Wii Fit (fifth), Wii Play (tenth) and Wii Music (twelfth) all moving up the charts.

WoW drops 32 places

I may be wrong here, but isn't the installed user base of WoW subscribers in the UK about 2.5 million? That would explain the drop, everyone who plays it went out and bought the expansion pack the day of release, so it isn't as bad as this article made it out to be.

I don't think the article is saying that it's just pointing out that a title that was at the summit has dropped. It is still a rapid drop and people should still be buying it . If you look at the PC Budget games chart World Of warcraft is still at the top after a very long time and an add on for it is still selling well also and features in the top 5.

I suspect the reason for the drop is the sheer volume of releases and people having to choose which titles they purchase initially, others will probably get it for Christmas and some who will have shown great restraint will probably buy it once they have had some Christmas money.

Rock Band 2...

.. It's not going to get in the top 40 when the likes of GAME have not even got it in it's Xbox 360 charts. How is a newly released game going to sell when you only put it in the games library and not on the chart shelf.

Re: Rock band 2 - Jimothy
sorry to break your illusion of the in store games charts but they do not reflect what people actually buy. Basically the position in the chart is paid for by publishers, whomever pays the most gets chart position 1 and so on. It's called trade marketing, obviously EA did not bother spending any of the trade marketing budget with Game on Rockband 2, they must have blown it on Need for Speed.
Same thing happens in the supermarket with groceries, why do you think all the big brands are always displayed at the nice eye level shelf space and not right at the top or in the corners were no-one can see them.
