Square Enix: ‘FFXIII on 360 is not a betrayal’

Insists that multi-format approach will not be detrimental to the quality of the product

Japanese publisher and developer Square Enix has yet again defended its decision to go multi-platform with its upcoming RPG Final Fantasy XIII, whilst admitting that it would have liked to have got its title to the market sooner.

In July Square Enix announced that its hugely anticipated sequel would for the first time not be exclusive to PlayStation at launch, and would simultaneously arrive on Xbox 360. Bringing its title to more gamers is obviously good news for the industry, but this didn’t quell the inevitable internet fanboy rage.

Speaking to Kikizo, the publisher’s corporate director Shinji Hashimoto said of the decision: “I'd rather they not think of this as a betrayal or disappointment. It's not like we're cancelling or delaying the PS3 version at all. It's more of an added bonus for 360 fans. We won't be putting them at a disadvantage in any way.”

Final Fantasy series producer Yoshinori Kitase added: “I'd like to add I think that maybe because it's going multiplatform that some fans are worried about the game's scope being reduced to fit onto both consoles.

“The fact is, the PS3 version is what's in development right now, and the team is working to specialise that version to the very best of the PS3's abilities. After that, we'll do the 360 port and optimize it to that particular hardware. There will be no decrease in quality as a result of the game appearing across two platforms.”

Hashimoto went on to admit that the firm would have ideally liked to get its title to the market sooner than it has done: “We would have loved to have had it ready sooner for the console, but with the development of new hardware, it's become more and more complicated to develop software. The process has become far more time-consuming.”

My primary motive for buying a PS3 out the window, now the question is whether ff 13 versus is worth splashing the £300 for?

The xbox 360 has a superior range of JRPGs and is cheaper so you should just get that.

Can anyone explain to me why there is this big fuss about this game because i can't quite understand the whole hype surrounding it and the big deal with it being on the Xbox360 i would understand with say Zelda being multiplatform or something. With Square Enix being so hit and miss with there RPG's at the moment i would say that is more of a concern.

Holding back the english-spoken PS3-version until the 360-version is ready IS THE BETRAYAL! And in PAL-regions we'll have to wait 'til 2010 - Thank you Squeenix for being greedy after the green money out of Redmond!
It's a shame for an software-house with this long reputation...

All hail BunnySan, the fanboy has spoken.
Square enix are not there to panda to your insecurities, they are in it for the money - plain and simple.
Wow if you feel betrayed by a faceless company, I'd hate to be around when your first girlfriend leaves you for your best mate!

I find it hard to understand why PS3 owners have a problem with this game going multi platform, i lost interest in the franchise a long time ago and unless they pull something special out of the bag, i'll probably be giving this one a miss too.
There are many great RPGs that have made FF almost redundant, Fallout 3, Fable 2, Mass Effect are all more exciting franchises to me to name a few and i'd love to see a new Jade Empire game.
I'd have had no problem had the Fable or Mass Effect series been multi platform, i'm happy to share my entertainment, i always find it strange, if a great movie comes out you want everyone to see it yet fanboys have some kind of weird sharring issues.

AH Have you ever played a Final Fantasy game they are the most gratifying experiences ever to grace a console IMO and as long as SE get it right they can take as long as they want on the game be it on 360 PS3 or even Wii! (There I said it).

I've owned all versions of the series from the original NES version way back in the late 80's except the last PS2 version which i've played but didn't bother to purchase, they were some of the greatest games i've played however i have gradually grown tired of the series to the point were i can't be bothered to play them to the end anymore.
If they can bring something special back to the series then i'll welcome it back with open arms but as it stands i think they should build a new franchise with some fresh new ideas.

Lets just hope this doesnt turn out to be like the other 360 JRPGS.
Square Enix current 360 jrpgs are currently rated the worst rpgs in Japan.

If anything Nintendo fans should be most upset with Square Enix - ever since Final Fantasy was originally on Nintendo consoles only!

It's silly for gamers to get so upset with this news. I could unserstand them being upset if Square Enix had cancelled the PS3 version in favour for the 360 one.
But they are putting them out on both platforms, PS3 fans aren't losing out on anything here.

Oh no this game I really really like is coming out on a console I don't own. Now I hate the game and I won't buy it as I feel so upset that even though I can still play it others can as well. I must have really wasted my money buying this console BEFORE the game came out, it was all I bought my console for. And now it's useless.

Jesus.

Bringing this out on both platforms will be be only good for the industry, the only thing I'm miffed about is the delay.
But then again, I guess it's nothing more than curiosity with this FF title because personally I don't think there's been a decent FF since 9 on PSONE.

Like in the old Atari-vs-Amiga-days multiplatform-titles are crap on the superior Amiga because of the greedy and lazy softwarehouses. Programmers in that time thought that 32 colours on screen where enough for the Commodore machine, shame on them!

Nowadays we PS3-owners see multiplatformers just the way they are possible on the 360 - which is a shame too...

FFXIII could be the other way round (hopefully) but until then we PAL-gamers have to offcourse wait and believe until the 360-version is ready - not before 2010 I think...

Funny thing about these software titles is, you have to spend the money making them upfront.

FFXIII had better raise the bar and SE knows it. SE's run in recent days has not been good, and their "exclusivity" to any console is going to hurt them. There are several games I'm passing on because I'm not going to buy the consoles they are played on. Not. Going. To. Buy. Two consoles are my limit. One loved, the other collects dust.

I wish the consoles were like DVD players... Buy the player you want and the content you want, and forget about the proprietary crap! Why not have LBP play on an XBox? or Halo on a PS3? Am I alone is seeing exclusivity as a terrible thing?!?! Don't developers make money on the software over hardware anyway?
