Entertainment retailer joins Asda in finding alternative to EUK – but has to disappoint some consumers
Zavvi is the latest retailer to set up a direct buying relationship with entertainment suppliers – following EUK’s decline into administration last week.
EUK previously bought and supplied products for Asda, Zavvi, Sainsbury’s, WH Smith, Morrisons and Woolworths. However, since parent company Woolworths pulled it into administration last week, relationships with entertainment suppliers have been troubled.
This morning, Zavvi announced via its website that it was struggling to meet customer demand, due to EUK-related supply problems – and that it had cancelled existing customer orders.
Asda announced on Friday that it will be buying direct from suppliers – including games publishers – to ensure it doesn’t suffer stock shortages this Christmas.
Zavvi told MCV in a statement today:

‘In light of the recent news that the Woolworth's Group and its CD, DVD & Games distribution arm Entertainment UK have gone into administration, zavvi (in the short term) is dealing direct with relevant suppliers to ensure stock of new release titles such as Take That’s 'The Circus' and DVDs such as Hancock and Dark Knight are available to its customers in its 125 UK & Irish stores.’

MCV Forums have earnt me a fortune this christmas.
To BMH.
Anyone can be a busy fool - believe me, I've been there.
I've done the deals for a thousand of a product - namely Activision and THQ only to have it still sitting on the shelf when a national has gone half price on it and had to follow suit with no price protection and that was back in the day that I was probably one of the top six accounts for indies - so that gives you an indication of how well we're treated.
Anyway - this year, I've stood back [behind my counter, obviously] and kept a firm eye on this website awaiting the next price point to be raped by a national and took out the grubby pound notes from my cash register and emptied the surrounding stores of stock [double edged sword].
I've made a shed load of money this christmas already, cleared most of the debt that distribution helped me get myself into with the meagre margins and the lack of back door support - the forced pushing of bundles and the bull**** about shortages that leave you sitting on stock you can't shift.
So - my friends, take a deep breath and take solace in the fact that the natonal sector is in far more turmoil than the indie one has been in.
I would agree with BMH on his point of moaning - we can all moan about something or other - the key in business is to make the best of what you have in front of you and right now - with half of nationals out of stock and the other half over stocked and panicking - the opportunities are a plenty.
Re: MCV Forums have earnt me a fortune this christmas.
**KOTI*** same here MCV is always first to let us all know which high street Idiot / supermarket will give us the best margin. So far this year 2008 we have spent £100K on the high street, amazon & supermarkets and made far more money than we would have at centresoft, gem etc.
Asda & Zavvi have gone direct which will mean even cheaper prices for us to stock our shelves and more profit.
I am sure that all you Indies out there have time to shop around the High Street TRY IT !!!!!
Any non Indies reading this (Public) you can moan all you
like but its what we have to do to survive.
How many High street stores & supermarkets are actually making profit from Games / Consoles ????????????
Going Direct
@Koti
Did you have a direct account with Nintendo?
Getting rather frustrated with Koch's lack of stock and wondering if going direct is the answer.
Is it possible to buy direct from Nintendo Europe? How can I contact them? Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I've copied that into a text file, and every time I hear one of you indies moaning, I'm going to re-post that.
Because as a developer, I am sick of you lot moaning about this deal and that deal and the damage that pre-owned games is doing etc... When all the while, you are quite happy to buy stock from another retailer and then sell it at over double the price you buy it at.
Plus, if you are buying "Game" stock, Game put stickers on their items to indicate their "New" condition, which means you must be removing those stickers, thereby taking away the "New" condition (which is proven by the fact that you would no longer be able to return them to Game as "New"). You also become the second owner as far as the retail chain goes... So, iIf you are selling effectively used/second-hand stock as "New" then I suspect there is a legal issue in there. I think you have provided a pretty good basis for some investigative work to be done, that's for sure... happy dayz indeed.
Maybe you should all go and find a dark corner to discuss your "gamer exploiting, dubious tactics" out of sight of the people keeping you in a job.
ha ha
ha ha ha, we only moan about lack of support from dist,if a game is cheaper than your supplier what do you do? if we buy from supermarkets we only add £4-£5 so its cheaper than we could ever do it bought from suppliers, as for legal issues, how do people sell new games on amazon, ebay etc etc, thats just rubbish. We have lost alot of regular customers due to xbox flashing and R4, customers even come in askin us to help them with R4s and how to flash their wii/360, they dont see it as illegal, you sound very bitter here, what do you care what indies do, the game is still sold my friend, so calm down.
Re: Re: Re: Re: MCV Forums have earnt me a fortune this christma
To Koti and Henry,
Don't misunderstand me....I totally understand the indie stores position and the constant struggle with the grocers and the bigger companies being able to dictate promotional prices and bundles. I sympathise and understand that more often than not this is the owners mortgage, family, career on the line etc.
However, my point was that everyone is in the same position and everyone else but Henry Ford seems to be getting on with it and doing their best to drive footfall and business into their stores. Constant moaning about the bigger accounts for distributors and bigger companies does not make any difference to our indie stores - business must continue regardless of what the upper ecelons of competitors are doing. And whatever the article is about, HF always brings it back to your obvious insecurities about these said companies.
I reply to your retort...... glad to hear you've sold 4 Wii consoles while writing - it's nice to hear something positive from you......FOR ONCE!!
