US: Evangelists draw up Xmas games buying guide

30 titles fingered for their offensive content, including the 'homo-erotic' Army of Two

Self titled ‘conservative Christian’ Florida-based investment firm The Timothy Plan has published a Christmas shopping guide for parents that is designed to alert them to potentially offensive content in many games currently on the market.

Whilst the appearance of titles such as Grand Theft Auto IV, Silent Hill: Homecoming, No More Heroes, Fallout 3, Hellgate London, Gears of War 2 and Saints Row 2 is to be expected, a few surprise inclusions also make the listing.

Activision-Blizzard’s World of Warcraft is highlighted for its inclusion of alcohol consumption, the fact it’s addictive and the occasional use of the word ‘damn’. Which is starred out in the report.

Other inclusions are Rockstar’s Bully: Scholarship Edition (comic mischief and ‘gay’ achievements), Devil May Cry 4 (demonic), Metal Ger Solid 4 (tobacco) and Army of Two, which is chosen as it apparently boasts a somewhat ‘homo-erotic undertone between the two main characters’.

“Many, if not most, parents who buy their kids video games really don't know the extent of sex and violence imbedded in them,” The Timothy Plan president Art Ally stated. “From drug use, prostitution, murder and mayhem to vulgar profanity and blasphemy these games have become a powerfully negative influence on our kids.

“I believe if parents would take a moment to look at the report we've created, their game selections would be quite different.”

Best publicity ever!

Maybe the software houses should pay the likes of cliff richard to denounce games like these, surest way to make kids run to them....

If you just looked at the score card at the back of the report you'd see it's actually quite informative and it probably good for parenst - it might stop them buying GTA4 and other games for 12 year olds - they have 18 certifcates for a reason. This would actually help the industry if parents understood what they were actually buying. Some things parents won't mind like the use of tobacco but they'd be far more informed about the content before providing young kids with it.

How many parents would buy a Saw film for 12 year old? almost zero but the number the buy gta4 for them is far too high.

Forget for a second its done by US evangelists. The comments about the games actually shows that they've played the games unlike many of the stupid articles you see about.

Yes, that is true to an extent. Consumer knowledge of age suitability in gaming is undoubtedly an area of concern. But it's hard to take a report such as this seriously when games are black-listed for references to homosexuality, no?

IF anything, the parents buying their 12 years olds a copy of GTA4 need to learn how to read the badge that says 18... not to be more familiar with the content. As JD said, it's 18 for a reason...

@5 It just informs people about the content in the game; its up the the people that buy the games to decide if a catergory is relevant. The score cards have seperate columns for sex, nudity and ***/lesbian as well as violence, alcohol etc...

Personally I don't have a problem with games that contain a lot of violence due to content such as world war 2 but don't have the same view with some of the violence in games like gta4 but the ratings give seem to be based on the quantity rather than the context. If you read the game descrptions they sum up the contents well though so you can make an informed decision.

The games are hardly blacklisted - they're not the critirea for age ratings it's just info. Army of Two for example only gets a rating of 1 our for 3 for *** / Lesbian content because there's not much but it's there. It's certainly not a make or break decision for me but it may be for others. You'd also find that many evangelists don't have a problem with it either but a lot do. It's a lot easier to take seriously than the Daily Mail for example who seem to chase headlines over fact.

There is one easy solution.

Dont let idiots have children...

The amount of parents that come into my store to buy GTA for there under 10 I find shcking.. and when you point it out they are almost offended that you have pointed out there terrible parenting skills.

Parents need to learn a few things..

LEARN TO READ !!!!

LEARN TO CARE !!!

TAKE AN INTEREST IN YOUR CHILDREN !!!

Dont even dare to think.. oh i dont understand these things...

If you dont understsad these things you really should not be bringing up children.

Not being funny TORC, my comment related to the topic, it was valid and it has been backed up by someone who actually works in retail.

You comment bares no relevance to anything...

Childish, but what a dubious image...

For such a morally upright organisation, they certainly used a rather dodgy photograph for their guide.

I know it's childish, but it does appear like the guy could be 'inappropriately touching' himself behind the child's head.
Would they use the same image if the man was replaced by a woman with her blouse unbuttoned, her hand on her crotch & a smile of pleasure on her face?

I can't believe they have the gall to flag Gran Turismo 5 for sexual content in a document with such a dodgy photograph as the title page. Talk about hypocrisy.
