US specialist retail giant reportedly making bid for half of troubled UK retailer’s stores
US games retail giant GameStop has tabled a bid for around half of Woolworths’ 815 stores, MCV understands.
If accepted, that would immediately make the firm the UK’s biggest specialist chain – eclipsing GAME’s 397 stores. However, the Basingstoke-based retailer also owns 51 concessions – and, of course, 253 Gamestation outlets.
It could be the biggest step forward yet for GameStop’s UK expansion plans. The firm currently owns stores in Stockport and Birmingham, as well as over 40 outlets in Eire.
A well-placed source said: “GAME frustrated GameStop when it bought GameStation. Bosses at GameStop had pretty much given up on launching a UK assault – but now, thanks to Woolies, that door is open again. They’re up against other bidders, but they’ll fight tooth and nail.”
Woolworths went into administration last week, with distribution arm EUK. Deloitte is selling off the retailer’s assets.

Dragon’s Den star Theo Paphitis is keen on buying the most successful Woolworths stores. Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s are also all reportedly interested in purchasing outlets.
GameStop did not comment when contacted by MCV.

Storesize?
Never been to a woolworth in UK, but aren´t the stores like 10 times bigger than the usual GameStop? What are they gonna do with all that space?
Could be interesting
Well, GAME can say goodbye to rising like-for-like year-on-year sales if this goes through. Watch that share price.
I think we do need this though: with GameStation owned by GAME, a bit of genuine healthy competition would be good for the customer. But that said, with supermarkets and the likes of HMV and Zavvi broadening their gaming horizons, something's got to give.
Unfortunately, it's likely to be the remaining indie outlets that are squeezed out first.
Re: Storesize?
Yeah the majority of stores are massive and I cant imagine why they would want so much space especially the stores with multiple floors! But if anyone has to buy them I hope its them ive never even seen a Gamestop store.
i cant see it
i can see this, they would have to absorb all that 350m debt, and then refit all shops they wanted to use,
the cost would be unreal, i never understood how game and gamestation sells well with titles at 49.99 the indies are much cheaper than this and used consoles for £5 lower than new !! peopel must be fools to shop their i dont get it, maybe its just the high trade in price they give, fools you but they sell high also. false economy to me
Re: i cant see it
GAME aren't expensive across the board though. If there's an Indie in the same town, then that GAME will be cheaper. Until the Indie goes bust, that is, then the prices go back to normal.
Oh, and GameStop won't have to absorb any debt. GameStop is just interested in picking half the store count from the bones of a dead company, not keeping an existing company live.
Re: Re: i cant see it
@JamesAnderson: It's the second-hand market that keeps the big games retailers alive. Second hand is almost pure profit to them.
Re: Re: i cant see it
@Posemuckl- Depends if Woolie's own the premises or not- if they do, then GameStop can very easily put up a partition wall, stick a GS store on one side of it and rent out the other half- or even just not bother filling it with a GS and rent/sell on the whole shebang.
Re: Re: Re: i cant see it
I work for the game group and please tell me the last game that came out at £49.99...
We never sell games at that price point!
Re: Re: Re: Re: i cant see it
In all honesty, I actually like GAME, mainly as their loyalty scheme is pretty awesome, pound for pound it's better than any supermarkets. (I saved up for a free DS from pre-order loyalty points).
But i've not bought a game from Woolies for years, mainly as the dozy pillock behind the counter insists on sliding the disc all over the counter with his clumsy hoofs before cramming it in the box, thus scratching it to hell in the process.
They were awesome for games in the 80's though, pushing the Master System and stuff, I loved going to Woolies, John Menzies, WHSmiths and Boots to buy games back then.
If you told a kid today you used to buy games from Boots, they'd never believe you.
