The Guardian sticks up for gaming following attack from music mag NME
UK daily broadsheet The Guardian has chosen to stick up for the games industry following an article in yesterday’s NME magazine that attacked titles like Rock Band and Guitar Hero for deterring kids from playing real musical instruments.
The NME piece quoted Q Radio presenter David Quantick as stating: “Games are not rock 'n' roll, they're metal – aggressive, loud, violent and scared of women. You can't dance to a game or have sex to it. Games are still for nerds. Rock 'n' roll is about f*****g, games are about w*****g. Rock music makes you leave the house and meet drugs, games make you stay in and smell of your own p**s.”
In response, Guardian blogger Keith Stuart today commented: “The piece begins with a rather familiar complaint, this time voiced by Chad Kroeger of Nickleback, that games like Guitar Hero are diverting kids away from taking up real instruments.
“Personally, I feel that if Guitar Hero has prevented the foundation of just one new Nickleback-inspired band, Harmonix, the creator the Guitar Hero series, should be given some sort of medal.”
So that’s a big thumbs up for The Guardian, then. And a saliva-coated pigeon’s head for NME.

hahaha, hilarious
Re: lol
Tis funny, but to be fair, I don't think saying Rock is about going out and meeting drugs is a clever thing to say. I also like how certain words are filtered in the article, but the tags are showing the words in their uncensored glory. Nice.
Re: lol
That paper rubbished Anarchy Punk In The UK and their first review of The Clash suggested they "should be returned to the garage, preferably with the motor running."
The idea that the NME was ever THE Rock 'n' roll paper is a complete myth. This proves that!
Get with it NME, games are going to claim the music industry, and change Rock 'n' Roll forever. stop crying!
Ummm thats a bit wrong?!
Harmonix created Rockband.......Neversoft created Guitar Hero?!
Ummm thats a bit wrong?!
Harmonix created Rockband and Neversoft created Guitar Hero......hmmmmm!
I also can't see how you can play Guitar Hero/Rockband and w**k at the same time?! Pretty special though if you can do it all at once, huh?!
Re: Ummm thats a bit wrong?!
Red Octane created Guitar Hero and had Harmonix write the software. ATVI later bought Red Octane and had the in house studio Neversoft take over the development.
Harmonix sold themselves to MTV to make Rock band that is publisher by EA.
Clear?
Re: Ummm thats a bit wrong?!
If I could **** and play anything I'd apply to be on next year's Britain's Got talent!
Re: Re: Ummm thats a bit wrong?!
Don't these kids know that w***ing is the new f***ing?
Re: "Rock 'n' roll is about f*****g, games are about w*****g"
Earlier this year Wired ran an article on how Guitar Hero and Rock Band are inspiring some people to actually go out and pick up a real instrument.

Re: Re: "Rock 'n' roll is about f*****g, games are about w*****g
i know people who take drugs more often gaming!!!!!
but if narrow minded people from NME really want to glorify rock that much they have to remember, sitting in his office typing about rocking, ****ing and drugs (much in the way HEAT magazine does), doesnt mean they do those things
Re: Re: Re: "Rock 'n' roll is about f*****g, games are about w**
David Quantick is a pretentious little pratt, who thinks he's edgy by posting angry quotes and thought he'd jump on everyone's favourite whipping boy in the press.. I wouldn't take gaming advice from a jumped up sketch writer more than I would from a tabloid newspaper.
Re: Re: Re: Re: "Rock 'n' roll is about f*****g, games are about
drugs are for idiots
theres something missing in there lifes and there only happy when there on them.
rock band and guitar hero are fun games that anyone can play.
if your really bothered about playing an istrument you will go and do it.
and liek the guy said "Red Octane created Guitar Hero and had Harmonix write the software. ATVI later bought Red Octane and had the in house studio Neversoft take over the development.
Harmonix sold themselves to MTV to make Rock band that is publisher by EA.
the guy obviously did not bother to investigate who published these games and just wanted to make people think he's 'cool' and take the piss.
just like the daily mail blames my chemical romance for people commiting suicide..hmm?
rant over.
Re: Re: Re: Re: "Rock 'n' roll is about f*****g, games are about
No. Just No. We like both music and gaming so stop being so bloody snobby.
Just stop you sound like noel gallagher. that's a bad thing, by the way.
clueless NME. another few years at best. the internets will eat you up you elitist dinosaur.
Re: Re: Re: Re: "Rock 'n' roll is about f*****g, games are about
tut tut- nerds are upgrading- rock n rollers are neanderthal like. Have fun having neanderthal sex- i prefer my right hand to Amy Winehouse lookalikes- compared to that my right hand is beautiful, and clean.
Re: Re: Re: Re: "Rock 'n' roll is about f*****g, games are about
You have to wonder, if that's the case... why is the music industry full of so many w****rs...
Rock music is becoming the home of the pretentious tw@, kept in the spotlight by Melodyne's rescue mode. Unfortunately, even Melodyne can't turn Quantick's cr*p into something worth listening to.
I'm sorry, but I'd rather be a "genuine" game developer, than a "fake" musician any day of the week. At least I know that the gamer is buying something I made and not the output of some automated "error correction software".
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: "Rock 'n' roll is about f*****g, games are a
Not too long ago these cheap jibes were often dished out by journo's from the movie industry towards video games and gamers in general. What's interesting is things are alot quieter these day.. Wonder why?
Now that video games are eating into the music industries profits as well expect to hear more attacks as some music journalists/musicians realise there chosen passion no longer has quite the same social status as it once enjoyed. The truth is however that all 3 entertainment sectors (film, music, game) will continue to co-exist happily, it's just that the oldest 2 will and are being forced to take a cut in popularity to make way for the newest kid on the block.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: "Rock 'n' roll is about f*****g, games a
Smash Hits where are you7?

Same old student drivel from the NME, stick to saying how great bands from the north of england are wallowing in your ignorance..
Get REAL!
OK.
Maybe Guitar Hero & other games are fun. But the point is - there are too many people too obsessed with it. It's just yet another sign of those sad times when the "virtual" is becoming as important (or more) than what's real.
Too many people playing virtual games, visiting Second Life, swearing by Facebook and unabble to imagine life without internet or a mobile phone.
People are becoming technology junkies, lost in virtual-land.
The Guitar Hero phenomenon is just yet another reflection of this.
At least a guitar, any crap piece of gear made of wood and strings, is something real - you dont need a screen to enjoy it. You can express your emotions through it, rather than just react to an overdose of colours and sounds.
The NME guy sounds like an idiot, praising all the old, tired rocknroll cliches, and The Guardian has got a point, when they say if Guitar hero prevents more Nickelbacks being formed, that's great.
I don't know about any stats that show people are getting less interested in real guitars because of Guitar Hero - if that's true, than its very sad.
The bottom line is: Guitar Hero is just a videogame. It might be fun, its certainly not cool, and its certainly not something people should obsess about.
With a video game, you're just a consumer. Its not about creativity.
With a real guitar, you can express yourself, be creative, connect with people, even. HOW people use a guitar is another matter - of course there's lot of rubbish out there.
But, as a thing, a guitar is far better, more interesting and important than Guitar Hero (or any game EVER) will ever be.
Re: Get REAL!
Guitar and guitar hero are completely different things. You can say a guitar is more important than any game if you want, but that depends on the person. Someone who has no interest in musical instruments would completely disagree. Multiplayer games make for a lot of fun and help with socialising on a wider scale than just your school or workplace. Musical instruments are great, for musicians. Games are great, for gamers. Its just the way it is. Of course you can be a musician and a gamer, but if you were you wouldn't play games like guitar hero and rockstar. In my opinion.
Re: Re: Get REAL!
Quantick and Stuart are both 100% right, of course. Where's the controversy?
Re: Re: Re: Get REAL!
i assume quantick will be posting an article about how players of call of duty are reducing the number of people joining the army.......
