Could credit crunch hit Nintendo hardest?

Analysts claim that less dedicated casual gamers will be the first the cut back on games spending as belts tighten

The extent to which the games industry is or is not ‘recession-proof’ will be revealed over time, but two leading industry analysts have warned that casual-centric games firms, and more specifically Nintendo, could be more severely affected than most.

I would have thought that the 'hardcore gamer' market would be hit hardest once their mum's start telling them that they can't have the money for Generic-FPS 5: Modern Fanfare, or what have you.

The hardcore gamers will sell something - anything - to keep on gaming. Casual gamers will do something else.

I'm sure they're prepared with a range of titles to combat the credit crunch blues.

Imagine...Redundancy
Cooking Mama goes to Lidl
Professor Layton and the collapse of Landsbanki

etc. etc.

I love this idea of 'hardcore gamers', it's as hilarious as the idea of 'hardcore trumpet players' who will do anything to keep on playing the trumpet.

I'd be the first to admit I have a mildly problematic FPS addiction, but I'm not sure I'd start selling furniture to buy the next re-skin of Call of Duty. Now I've typed that, I'm not so sure actually.

Anyhow when the credit crunch has us all selling furniture for a few pennies, and fighting over the last can of beans in Lidl, I'm sure those 'casual gamers' will just read a book, spend time with their partners, do some gardenning, yoga, cook a delicious meal using fresh ingredients or engage in less expensive hobbies. Casual gamers… what on earth are they doing with their lives, eh?

The Wii seems to be the home of games that people can afford and developers can afford to make games for. They should be okay.

Ah yes, but the PS3 has got HOME, which will allow gamers to wander around for hours on end, completely for free, looking at stuff. This will surely come to be seen as the defining credit crunch gaming experience.

considering that the wii sold over 2 million in november, and that while the economy is taking hits, it is mostly hype and people being scared into bleakness, it will not take a hit. Soup kitchens will not be opening for entire cities and your parents and you will not lose your jobs and be penniless. Nintendo has been making hundreds of millions of dollars profit each month for the last 3 years with DS and Wii. they could take a hit and it wouldn't even make them bat an eyelash
