Microsoft: We're beyond Home

Xbox exec calls Sony’s Home “Second Life for hardcore gamers”

Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg has disputed consumer demand for Home, dubbing the technology as outdated and pointed to Live as a “premium experience” by comparison.

In an interview with Kotaku, the group product manager for Xbox 360 said: “What Home to me feels like is Second Life for hardcore gamers. It doesn’t feel like it broadens the experience and invites people in.

“When they unveiled it, it seemed innovative. I think what’s happened is now here we are a couple of years later and we feel beyond that. It feels like 2005 tech in 2008. I’m not sure that’s what people want.”

Greenberg’s comments about Home – which is due to launch today – arose as he addressed the issues of price cuts. While he acknowledged the ability to lower the Xbox 360’s price has “benefited us tremendously”, he did not believe reducing the price of Xbox Live would help add value to the console.

He referred to Xbox Live Gold, which currently costs £40 a year, as an “upscale experience”, adding: “I think we have seen people are willing to pay for the premium experience. When they compare Live, even to Home, there is still a huge gap.”

"I’m not sure that’s what people want"

Then why create the XBox Avatar's.

And can someone please explain to me the "huge gap" between XboxLive and PSN. Nearly everything you can do on Live you can do on PSN. The only thing I see is NetFlix but we have a brower which grant's us access YouTube, Hulu, etc.

What is the "huge gap" because I don't see one anymore.

dude, you just said that PSN has "NEARLY" the same things as the XBL. which means that it doesn't have everything that XBL. so, if XBL is better, and offers WAAAAAAAAAAAY more content, what's your argument here?

Xbox Live costs £30 a year MCV, if you buy a subscription from the right places.

VinTheDean, Don't get so wound up by this, Sony and MS are competing with one and other, it's this guys job to say what's best for MS, and I can assure you Sony would say Home is the best thing since sliced bread.

It's all a war or words!

Meh. They're both just competing for customers. But tbh he was wrong about saying if he lowered the price of live he wouldnt get more customers. I'd go out and buy and 360 if Live was £20 a year not £40. Or at least put a longer lasting trial. Anyway back on topic, HOME isn't 2005 tech in 2008. In 2005 Xbox wouldn't of done this

Well he would say that about his biggest competitor on the day they launched it wouldn't he?! Just like he would be saying what a phenomenal development it is and how it's huge step forward for console gaming had Microsoft thought of it instead!

I seem to recall Microsoft said a similar thing about the XMB when Sony announced their new interface saying how they thought their blades system was superior, and said the same thing when Nintendo announced Mii's.

But what happens a year or so later - Microsoft revamp their system with an interface that is essentially the love-child of the XMB and the Mii's!!!! The same PR suits then go on about how great these "innovations" are!!!

Typical Microsoft PR bull****, I'm yet to see a situation or event they haven't managed to spin...

How is Sony's online experience further behind Xbox Live. I've had both consoles and online gaming on the PS3 far exceeds Xbox Live. Lag is never an issue online with PS3 unlike Xbox Live which will no doubt be down again for everyone over xmas.

This content is amusing.... The Xbox live service I have experienced first hand as I'm a previous owner of the system. I sold it before the release of the newer dashboard service however my friend has an xbox and to be honest the only thing premium about Live is the price. To say that home doesn't measure up to live with its premium features is a rather large understatement. I have friends with both systems and other the last few months the ammount of my friends that have gone from 360-ps3 are: 5, ps3-360 are: 0!

Clearly sony have been doing something right!

"And can someone please explain to me the "huge gap" between XboxLive and PSN."

Real voice chat, no matter if you're playing, watching movies, browsing or downloading content, party chat with 8 people simultaneously, (quick)starting games right out of the dashboard, a friend's list that's actually useful for something instead of staring at your buddy list with nobody ever online, a unified service that works with every game etc.

Sorry guys, i own both systems and XBL is not only better than PSN, it is light years ahead. You don't actually recognise this unless you spend time playing online instead of just judging the platform by merely looking at the surface. PS3 online gaming also lags in many cases, the difference is explained easily since XBL is peer-to-peer and PS3 has dedicated servers. There are pro's and con's to both solutions, but with XBL i have at least the ability to access my friend's list anytime, talk to anybody, do anything. Many times i used the 360 to chat with my buddies when we played PS3 exclusive online games, although all of us have Bluetooth headsets.

And how can the NXE be the love-child of PSN? I do not see a single similarity.
If you're really into multiplayer gaming there is only one choice right now, and this is Xbox Live. And this is not fanboy chatter, i love my PS3, it's just focused on completely different aspects of gaming...

I agree totally with 13.

I also own both consoles and have spent time playing on each. I am happy paying the £30-£40 a year for XBL as at present the service just warrents that charge over and above PSN. Voice comms are one area in particular, I too with firends have played over PSN but had the Xbox on for the voice comms.

Back to the subject of yesterdays Home release, that can be used as an example. The servers were so "overloaed" that people in most cases were unable to even log into home - PSN is free so you can't grumble and have to just wait. If they were to charge £30 a year they would have had the funds to bolster the servers etc like they do to XBL prior to big releases like Halo and Gears etc and there would have been no problem. Like it or not its the truth !!!

I do agree the Avatar system on the Xbox is a complete copy of Nintendos Mii's but I don't think they have ever denyed that I think in previous articles on this site even the guys at Nintendo said they were flatttered but see the Mii's and NXE Avatars evolving in totally different directions

All I can suggest is that before people start this age old argument which I'm sure will rage for the consoles life time's they sit and at least spend a week playing with each as from personal experiance it very quickly becomes obvious which is the paid for service.

Here's my question. Since a huge amount of work has already been done on "Second Life," and its free, why not port Second Life into Home or Live. Sony and Microsoft are in the business of selling consoles. Why not use the huge amount of work that has already been done? Everybody wins. Anybody see a downside to this idea? The front end would still be selling the games of course.
