Zavvi cuts Xbox 360 to sub-£100

Entertainment retailer also slashes PS3 price in last-minute Christmas sale

Zavvi is selling the Xbox 360 for under £100 for the first time in its history, MCV has learnt.

In a last-minute Christmas sale, the company has reduced the Arcade SKU to £99.99 – news which could kick off festive a hardware price war on the High Street.

The Premium 360 has been slashed to £149.99, whilst the Elite has been cut to £199.99 in the deal, which MCV understands will last up until Christmas Day.

The retailer has also cut the price of PS3 by £30 to £269.99.

Games in the retailer’s sale include Gears Of War 2 and Pro Evolution Soccer, which have both been reduced to £29.99.

The last UK retailer to reduce the Xbox 360 to under £100 was Sainsbury’s, which led GAME boss Lisa Morgan to instruct her staff to buy the consoles from the supermarket for resale.

A Zavvi spokesperson told MCV:

"Our organisation believes in giving our customers the best deal and service. We've put in place some great offers on Xbox hardware, giving customers the best value possible in the run up to Xmas. We appreciate how people's wallets are being tightened because of the economy."

Selling products for less than cost price is poor management we will not make money i am worried about my job look at woolworths staff no job next year and i fear we will be next i have been working today yes people are buying these great offers but nothing else they are been selective about what they buy in these hard times i just think this is a quick fix which come the end of christmas we will just be left with all the crap no one wants (ie profitable items) which we will have to sell cheap (making them non profitable) therefore selling everything making no money i'm no expert but that aint good and this is my job.

i agree....isn't this a bit deja vu? Didn't woolworths cut the price of the wii just before they collapsed?

It's well known that Zavvi have a serious cash flow situation. They're less concerned about making any profit from this offer than they are getting some quick cash through their tills to buy some new chart stock and/or pay their debts.

Lets not forget that Microsoft could actually be funding via marketing support - don't think just because the invoice says 100 and you sell for 100 that the deal is bad! This is always the case no matter what they say....

What a load of rubbish, they are not selling this at cost, thay pay about £30 per console cost. Wake up Britain we are being fleeced here. They make most of their money on the games, if they gave these away, it would not hurt them.

I think you could do with checking some of your facts, Paul. £30 for an Xbox 360 at cost? I reckon there will be some retailers on here keen to find out who your supplier is!
