Home can be system seller, Sony insists

Says users will grow with service and become “part of something very special”

As Sony’s open Home beta approaches the end of its first week, the firm has asserted that it believes the virtual world service will eventually grow to become a key selling point for the firms’s PS3 console.

Speaking to CVG, Home service manager for SCEE Dan Hill stated: “In time I would say that Home will definitely become a reason to purchase PS3. Today, we are at the beginning of a long journey – now is the time to start its evolution. No one else is doing anything of this scale or ambition.

“The PlayStation Network is getting better all the time. Home is integral to our online offering. If you buy a PS3 and you grow with us, as Home evolves, you are going to become part of something very special, something unlike you can experience anywhere else.”

It could be a system seller

I think Home could be a system seller, but Sony HAVE to advertise it. Their advertising and marketing is crap, nothing compared to the Wii and Xbox 360. Look how much advertising went into the NXE. Essentially its just a Live update, but MS have made it look like something much bigger, with certain success. PlayStation have to advertise alot more to gain a decent increase in sales for the PS3

I felt the look of Home is certainly one of quality and those adept to virtual worlds will love it – I on the other hand from a gaming perspective I hate it as they creators still seem to forget that the majority of us still want to run up vertical walls and shoot the crap out of stuff (Com on, 53 pence for a virtual potted plant I can't shoot lol).

This could sell systems for Sony as has Blu Ray for all the wrong reasons.

It could, but you have to wonder... which system will it sell. :D

After being in the Beta, I haven't been able to get in again since launch. So they now have another case of 2 year development, lots of promises and the result is like a school disco, full of children doing virtual "things" with female avatars... that also wants 3GB of your HDD and for you to "wait" all the time, while it loads something.

I don't quite know who is going to buy a PS3 for that. I mean, I don't like the XMB, but give me that over Home any day of the week.
