Fable II named Telegraph’s best game of 2008

Microsoft’s RPG and Bethesda’s Fallout 3 head up hardcore-centric top 50 from UK broadsheet

UK newspaper The Daily Telegraph this weekend published its extensive 50 Best Games of 2008 list, and Microsoft and Lionhead’s Fable II was the paper’s pick of the bunch for standout titles over the last 12 months.

The hardcore centric list leads with two of the year’s biggest RPGs – with Bethesda’s Fallout 3 trailing Fable II by just one place.

Also troubling the Top Ten were the likes of Microsoft’s Gears of War 2, Rockstar’s Gradn Theft Auto IV, Rising Star’s No More Heroes and EA’s Left 4 Dead.

In fact, it was a good haul for EA, with the publisher leading its competitors with an impressive nine entries in the listing, which included praise for the likes Rock Band 2, Left 4 Dead, Dead Space, FIFA 09 and Mirror’s Edge.

The list was also good reading for Sony, which despite often being accused of having a weak year in terms of first party software bettered both its platform holding competitors with seven entries in The Telegraph’s list – both Microsoft and Nintendo managed just four.

This article makes no comment on how the list was devised. What was the criteria used to decide how 'good' a game is for this list?

I don't think when people say Sony have a weak selection of first party games they mean there isn't many, I think they mean the quality of the first party games isn't as good as it could be.

For example there is only 3 games in the top 10 currently available for Sony on the PS3 in the UK, where as Microsoft has 6 for the Xbox 360 and Nintendo have 1 for the Wii.

Sony need to really work hard and get some top notch games out there, they have the quantity, now push for more quality. They also need to advertise a lot more, I just get the feeling some of these games would of done better with more advertising from the company.
