Ability to use PS2 discs with the PS3 game to be introduced with free downloadable update today

One year on from the release of the globally popular PS3 version of Sony’s SingStar series, the platform holder has announced that the long awaited backwards compatibility update will be released today.

so if they can do it with singstar, can't they do it with all ps2 games?
or is this update only for the select few that have that wonderful 60gb version.

Does this mean I can save a tenner, and buy the PS2 version of Singstar Abba, instead of the PS3 version? Interesting move, SONY.
