HMV: ‘We'll introduce gaming to millions of new consumers’

Gamerbase and Re/Play finalise HMV's games offer, claims CEO

HMV could introduce gaming to ‘millions’ of new consumers, as the chain puts the finishing touches to its specialist games offer.

At least that’s according to HMV Group CEO and UK and Ireland MD Simon Fox, who is delighted following the successful acquisition of Gamerbase and the launch of the firm’s pre-owned range: Re/Play.

“We’ve thought of ourselves as being a specialist for a while now, but given our move into pre-owned and the acquisition of Gamerbase, I hope this will be seen as the ‘last piece of the jigsaw’ of a full, comprehensive and compelling games offer, and that everyone else will view us as a specialist from now on,” Fox told MCV.

“It’s important that publishers and distributors see us as a specialist because of the potential that HMV can offer them in expanding the market. Consumers no longer buy CDs, DVDs and games in isolation – the chances are that the same customers will want access to all three. So, we’re in a unique position to open up the market to millions of customers from all backgrounds.”

Fox also responded to criticisms over its pre-owned offer, insisting publishers have been ‘broadly supportive’ and that the range can be beneficial for everybody.

“I firmly believe Re/Play will open the market to the wider customer-base, and that we will all benefit in the long-term.”

Read the story properly - we're not claiming to be reporting the Gamerbase story (indeed, we covered it on October 13th - a good 11 days before the date you cite - mcvuk.com/news/32012/HMV-acquires-Gamerbase).
Instead this is about HMV's view on its games offer after the acquisition and the launch of its pre-owned range.

Oh, the times I've walked into a GAME to buy a 360 title, only to think "I'm really in the mood to buy a movie and music CD with this" then put the game back and walked out the store disappointed. >.>

Well that's three different media now that the morons behind the counter can stare at me blankly when I ask a question.

But I look forward to Re/Play and them offering me £3 less for a used game than a new one.

@Guru (LOL) Larry: Based on the expertise shown on XLeague TV, I wouldn't think you lot would be able to come up with a question clever enough to get a blank stare from an HMV member of staff. XLeague TV isn't renowned for it's informed opinions and technical know-how now is it? You also make it sound like Game staff know what they are talking about... LOL @ that too.

You've clearly missed the point of the statement. The fact is, people who are interested in games are usually interested in other entertainment media. You only have to look at the number of PS3 owners who bought the machine to play Blu-Ray movies. How many Blu-Ray movies do Game sell?

Then you can consider the media applications of the next-gen consoles. Ripping a music CD to the 360 to use as in-game music for example. Just go and stand in HMV and see how many people walk out with a couple of CD's a couple of movies and a game, I do it on a regular occasion.

We're not just part of the Games Industry (well, those of us who qualify anyway), we're part of the media and entertainment industry, and that covers more than just games.

Some of us have also branched out into the real world and got married (to real people) too, so we don't just go into these shops with a "me, me, me" attitude.

Myself and my wife like to browse ALL the available entertainment and if we can do it all in one shop, all the better.

Well the difference is Larry^ i believe GAME are not stupid enough to sell music and videos as they are no longer a profitable item.

you can thank the supermarkets for that.

@Leec #4. I think you make some very valid points. However you ruin it by stating that you married a real person...shame on you.

I think the criticisms of this plan are well founded. Yes, people who buy DVDs and CDs also buy games. But they also buy milk. No one is suggesting HMV put some fridges in are they? Just because customers want lots of products doesn't mean one shop can or should try to sell them all
