New site offers DVDs, CDs and books as well as games l Firm ditches pre-owned from online offerings
The UK’s largest independent games retailer, CHIPS, has re-launched its ecommerce website with the product offering expanded to include DVDs, CDs and books.
The site, which also boasts a new design, no longer features pre-owned stock or mobile phone downloads.
And CHIPS’ joint MD Don McCabe hopes that the new web portal will be able to compete more closely with the likes of Play and Amazon.
“People expect to buy games cheaper on the internet, and so we’re being more competitive on price,” McCabe told MCV. “We believe this new site is an evolution of how people shop online. We used to put up a lot of information for each product, but nowadays gamers go to Gamespot, CVG or MCV for all their information needs; so we’ve stripped that down a bit.
“Our High Street stores give us an added advantage against our competitors. We hope that through the site we can drive people in store and vice versa. It would be ideal if a customer who buys online then visits one of our shops to trade the product back in. It’s a great way for us to utilise all of our channels.
“DVDs, books and CDs are clearly very significant additions,” he continued.
“And we have got a great offer on these products. We’ll also be selling other items, which we’ll unveil in the near future.”
The new CHIPS website is live now, and can be found at www.chipsworld.co.uk.

Who are Chips? I've yet to see one around London? Are they similar to CeX?
Re: ?
Looks like a cheap white label site. Bless
Re: Re: ?
I think its a good idea since the departure of woolworths and zavvi there is room for another retailer selling cds etc.
as another indie store owner i wonder how they will compete on price but wish them all the best.
Re: Re: Re: ?
Looks pretty good, nice and simplistic.
Good to see CHiPS marching on. Haven't heard much from them in a while and was getting worried. Good signs.
Re: Re: Re: Re: ?
I dont think it looks like a cheap white label site. they just have a really good online strategy.
and they now stock books and cd what other Independent video game retailer does that.
i know where i will buy my books and cd now (your warehouse must be packed)
good luck
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: ?
Nice to see change
But i used to like the old site. Used to be useful for info and pre-owned goodies.
Now its just boring like there rivals!
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: ?
why would you ditch a 30% margin pre owned offering and replace it with a 10% margin music offering. they will never compete with the big boys on choice or value on cds.
woolworths failed because it was a jack of all trades and a master of none. this seems like the same step.
i have a chips locally and to be honest they are pretty poor lots of u.s products on ds and stupidly high prices. we use them to trade in our rubbish and faulties.
Real Shame
A real shame that pre-owned has been removed. I used to get all my pre-owned from chips and grainger games websites, now that chips has gone its just grainger games that gets my business.
The new prices are good but they are no better than amazon, play ect. A real shame they've lost their niche and its not just another boring online store.
Re: Real Shame
Looks like a good site but a shame they don't do pre-owned anymore. I used to buy from their website and trade in at their shop but now I'll do all my trade-ins at ChartSwappers website I think.
