Fable creator unimpressed with this year’s slate; Development legend predicts mass price drops
Head of Lionhead Studios Peter Molyneux has said that 2009’s gaes slate is “looking a bit dry” – and predicted that economic pressures will see the price of new releases tumble.
Writing for the BBC, Molyneux says:
‘Next year, well, it's all looking a bit dry. All the triple A titles came out this Christmas and while there is stuff in 2010 we can look forward to, off the top of my head I cannot think of anything next year that really excites me.
‘Everyone says games are good value for home entertainment, despite the relatively high price. I'm not so sure. I think we're going to see a lot of price pressure put on games.’
He also pointed to Lionhead’s next secret project – but gave very little away. He added:

‘And as for Lionhead: now we've got Fable II out of the door we can focus on our other project - it's super secret for now - but we might announce it next year.’
Discussing 2008, Molyneux said:
‘2008 was the year that the Nintendo Wii got even better, more than anyone really thought possible when it first launched. The 360 did well, although it was put into the shade somewhat by the Wii. PlayStation 3 has been disappointing to say the least.
‘On the gaming front, GTA IV was a real moment for the industry. Rockstar nailed how you characterise a game and their engine and cut sequences are state of the art. However, only a few people actually saw all the cut sequences because the game was so tough to play. Are we making games too difficult? That's a question the industry has been asking itself of late.
‘We - as developers - are finally comfortable with the next-gen consoles and we saw a slew of sequels this year. Gears of War 2, Fallout 3, Fable II, the seventh Tomb Raider.
‘One of my personal favourites was Little Big Planet; superb artistry and a fantastic marketing job by Sony - yet it didn't make the numbers. I wonder if Christmas is really the right time to release a new title. We've got into a rhythm [of sequels at Christmas] which is all fair and well while people are buying games but we have to make sure we don't get complacent.’

Totally Spot On
I think Mr Molyneux is spot on in his analysis, the only game i can even think of that i am looking out for in hot anticipation is Fight Night Round 4.
Re: Totally Spot On
Looking a bit dry?? WTF!! Where the hell is Molyneux looking for info on 2009 game releases? I mean yeah, the line up for the 360 looks a bit dire, but look elsewhere and you'll see a host of exciting games to hit the market in 2009. **Cough PS3. The guy clearly still has that 360 stuck up his ass.
Re: Totally Spot On
I disagree.
KZ2, infamous, R&C, RE5, SF4, Heavy Rain, Halo ODST, COD6, AC2, FF13, Bioshock 2, Uncharted 2, just to name a few that is almost guaranteed to come out in 09. And games like GOW3 and GT5 are also very likely to come out. 09 is looking very hot. Although not so much for 360 atm as PS3.
Re: Re: Totally Spot On
Ya and what about Sonys "fantastic Marketing" with LBP. Are you kidding! ive seen a commercial once that vaguely showed LBP with no mention to it what so ever. If you didnt previously know about the game and saw that commercial you still wouldn't.
Re: Re: Totally Spot On
As stated by SuperM above, 2009 is going to see some fantastic titles!
Re: Re: Re: Totally Spot On
nintendi wii got much better???? well it sold a lot better but as for the games, just how many mini games or sequels do people want? how about wi fit, personally i dont want to be standing in my front room balancing on a tea tray in front of the family and the rest of the street i would sooner plug in a dance mat if i wanted to get fit and loo stupid doing it at least it would be fun.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Totally Spot On
In 2008 we had such a diverse range of great games which were fun to play and appealled to hardcore gamers like Fallout 3, Fable 2 & LBP then we had commercially successful games which captured the attention of the mainstream like MGS 4, GTA IV & Gears of War 2 as Mr Molyneux says correctly not to say this year won't be good also is that it does look dry when you compare what was on offer to us gamers in 2008.

A lot of airtime for a fairly poor opinion
As noted above, there are a ton of good games coming out in 2009 - and given LBP has sold over a million, I'm not sure what "numbers" Molyneaux is referring to - it's a pretty good performance by a new IP. Most of what Molyneaux says sounds like it's MS PR-speak, and this seems to be more of the same.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Totally Spot On
I suppose what he meant to say was "2009 is looking bleak for the 360, however all the other consoles that actually HAVE games will do just fine.".
It's funny how he says the PS3 was dissapointing, considering it outsold the 360 handidly throughout 3 quarters of 2008 until Microsoft were FORCED to cut the price sooner then they would've liked too.
Then after the price cut the 360 was still achieving a mere single - digit market share in Japan and being outsold 3 - to - 1 by a console twice it's retail price.
Whereas elsewhere, the Wii, despite also being more expensive, outsold the Xbox 360 some 5 - to - 1 every single week! Now, i thought consumers were supposed to be more price - consious in theese times, so why are they opting for a more expensive conosle??? Probably the fact that the 360 has no games and a 33% failure rate had something to do with it............
2009 looking bleak??? Does this guy know ANYTHING about the videogame industry??? 2009 is looking to be even greater than 2008 with games like:
Final Fantasy XIII
Gran Turismo 5
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Resident Evil 5
White Knight Chronicles
Killzone 2
Heavy Rain
New Ratchet & Clank
God Of War 3
Still, i suppose Molyneux's fanboy rants will keep Microsoft putting food on his table, wether he's making a complete idiot out of himself or not.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Totally Spot On
Dan Fry,
Aren't you just a bad as Peter? Quite clearly you are vice versa and have a PS3 stuck up your arse :-)
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Totally Spot On
@10
"He's making a complete idiot out of himself"
Your doing that all by your self David, worry about yourself not Peter.
In no way shape or form in the article is he showing any favouritsm towards either consoles, yet hurls of abuse from people with PS3's has occured. He sings LittleBigPlanet's praises, yet he is a fanboy for Microsoft. Have you seen yourself?
Why can't you just be happy with a console you've got and what consoles other people have got? Instead of coming on the internet and producing a massive tirade of all things negative towards Microsoft and all things positive towards Sony or vice versa. I.e Picking up selective information on sales and failure rates to try and make one console sound better.
Who cares? Just play the console you have and be happy?
Why do people persist on doing this?
