Virgin to return to UK High Street?

Sir Richard Branson to ‘inherit’ seven stores from Zavvi

Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group is to inherit stores from troubled retailer Zavvi – suggesting Virgin Megastores could return to the High Street 16 months after it left UK retail.

Zavvi administrator Ernst & Young has told MCV that Branson still holds the leases on seven Zavvi outlets.

Zavvi was forced into administration on Christmas Eve, placing 3,000 jobs at risk.

Branson sold the Virgin Megastore chain to Zavvi after a company MBO in September 2007.

I think its unlikely Virgin would want to get back into the entertainment retail sector again, in the failure of Zavvi it has lost the majority (if not all) of its Virgin Mobile concessions, I'm sure opening up possibly some of the smaller Zavvi units at Virgin Mobile stores could be a good idea.

Unfortunately I think the sites that have reverted back to Virgin Group are possibly the new store openings, the agreements to take the leases on these possibly pre date the Zavvi launch and could be the units Virgin are picking up.

Liverpool, Bristol and Belfast come to mind

What of the iconic Picadilly Circus store? It's always amazed me that that gargantuan place could pay for itself, but it would be a shame to see it finally disappear as a music retailer. Tower Records, Virgin then Zavvi have been there for as long as I can remember!

Does HMV fancy it or is this one of the branches that Mr B would be after?

Branson's Forte

This seems to be Sir Branson's forte.. when the going gets tough, flog the business to some dimwit for a nominal fee, then when it goes down the pan and it's debts are all written off, swoop in and make a killing.. nice. I honestly don't think they come anymore dimwitted than the brainless brigade that constituted the "management buyout".. they got the business for £1.. surely that should have told them something.
Can't see Megastores returning to the high street, the whole Megastore white elephant thing has had it's day. Margins on Entertainment products aren't high enough to make these stores viable anymore, let alone a chain of them.
Half a dozen stores would not have the clout to negotiate terms and discounts that would make them turn a profit in the diminishing entertainment high street retailing market and the current economic climate would be the coup de grace. What he will actually do with the stores will remain to be seen, but I'm sure he'll squeeze some sort of profit from it.. that's his forte.
PS.. Sir Branson, if you wish to ask someone with half decent ideas, please get in touch...

@3: That's worthy of a Monday morning that's so funny.

So tell me, your "half decent ideas" have got your wealth how close to Sir Richard Branson's?

I think your first sentence is the perfect example of "business strategy". If something is failing, get rid, pronto. If you get chance to buy it back cheap, do it.

I don't think you can fault the practices of Virgin. Yes they have had some failures, business goes like that, but they have had their fair share of success too.
