360 console sales reach 28 million units worldwide

Xbox Live revenue tops $1 billion

Microsoft has claimed that it has sold 28 million units of its Xbox 360, increasing the format’s lead over the PlayStation 3 to more than eight million consoles.

The platform holder has also reported huge growth to its Xbox Live service, which now boasts 17 million active members. Online consumer spending increased 84 per cent over 2007, with $1 billion spent on Xbox Live since the service's launch.

Microsoft also reported its busiest week ever for Xbox Live between Christmas and New Year’s Day, with 1.5 million concurrent members online.

“For Xbox, 2008 will be remembered around the world as a pivotal growth year at retail and online – even in the face of tough economic conditions,” said senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business Don Mattrick.

“Worldwide, a record number of players flocked to our broadest games and entertainment line-up ever, while the New Xbox Experience thrilled millions of fans by making our console even more engaging. And yet, we’ve only provided a glimpse into the new world of interactive entertainment that we’re imagining. The best of Xbox 360 is yet to come.”

The worldwide figures follows yesterday’s news that Microsoft has sold more than 8 million 360 units in EMEA.

Microsoft has done really well considering its only there 2nd generation of hardware... They made some massive mistakes but i get the feeling there have also learnt from many. The 360 feels more like a game machine then ps3. The whole package ie live - controller - cost -multiplatform games - etc...and with every one struggling to make ends meat the pricing structure fits in nicely for many people out there. People knock MS but if u took everything they have done in the last 20 years or so we all be lost with out them...One thing that really excites me is what MS has for its new console when it arrives. My self and my 2 sons have spent many a day enjoying the 360 since launch day...This is not a fan boy remark as i have owed or tried every console thats been released in the last 20 years, also was a CS nut...Thanks MS gamming finally feels right in the living room.

Strange, all other reputable sources report roughly a 24m worldwide figure.

Perhaps Microsoft is including their replacement units they hand out all the time?

We wont really know until Microsoft actually publishes their sales data like Sony and Nintendo have done.

We cant take their word.

Can I ask which other "reputable sources" you're referring to?

Microsoft announced 25m more than a couple of months ago Dean, it's now over 28m, so your saying they are blatantly lying?
Dear oh dear.

Why do people always shoot MS down? Jealousy that its doing better than your beloved Ps3??
God grow up! There games machines, Ps2 owned last gen and it looks like 360 is this gen apart fom Wii!
You can smell a fan boy remark straight away - petty remarks!
Well done MS for looking after your customers and delivering promises.

@ Jimothy

Microsoft announced it, but never released any sales data.

Both Sony and Nintendo have backed their claims with sales data. Microsoft NEVER do.

@Ben

Any of them. You can go for all the official ones and add them all up and it doesnt come anywhere near 24m (Chart Track (EU) , NPD (US), Media Create (JAP)).

Well, it wouldn't would it. As 24m is your figure and 28m is Microsoft's. Even the dubious VG Chartz agrees with Microsoft and not you.

I'm curious if you've actually sat down and done these sums? You have the ChartTrack, NPD and Enterbrain (not Media Create) figures to hand? If so, and you're right, start a blog and write a story about it. You'll get thousands of hits on your first day.

Dean, for your information SONY counts a sale as soon as they have finished making a unit..they always have done..on the basis that everything they make will eventually sell. So if it goes from SONY factory to SONY warehouse its a 'sale'. MS and Ninty only count units 'sold' to wholesale, not to actual consumers. Actual sell through data is patchy for EU. Even NPD in the states estimate most of their data and don't have accurate data from Walmart..they guesstimate that. This gen is over for SONY.

@Dean

Your not really putting up a good arguement here, your saying Microsoft are quite vague, and you shouldn't believe them, yet you are just as vague with your "data", and as Mr.A has quite rightly pointed out, there is more in the world than U.S, Japan and Europe.

The basis of your vague arguement is pretty much "They don't release sales data, they must be liars." Right...

@ Ben Im afraid its already been written about in blogs all over the place.

What do you mean even VG Chartz agrees? Its the only chart tracker that does - and its the most unreputable one.

And Media Create is the name of the company who does the research, Enterbrain is the magazine!

@ Ian Armitage

Thats the way Sony records sales data for ALL their products, as do many companies. They are manufacturing units that are purchased by the retailers. That counts as a sale as far as Sony is concerned.

Dean, this is ridiculous! Media Create is one stats company. Enterbrain is another. Check out any MCV Japanese market stories to see that. And yes, they publish Famitsu too.

OK, if this information is so widely available then please, do as Jimony says and present it to us!

@Ben Media Create is widely regarded in Japan as the most respectable media research company because of their unbiased nature. Famitsu publishes data from Media Create.

Enterbrain is a magazine that records sales data from other sources which I'm not sure of.

Ive tried to show the data but I dont think links are allowed because my comment hasnt been approved.

Microsoft have constantly been proven to be misleading consumers with all these bullying announcements.

OK, I'm not going to argue with you about Enterbrain and Media Create. MCV is a media company that enjoys clsoe ties with Enterbrain - I don't think it's unfair to say that we have a better idea about the company's validity than you.

Secondly, if that link to what is effectively a blog post filled with presumption and indeed assumption is your evidence, I think this discussion stops here. I smell the scent of a fanboy behind all this.

Gotta say I'm actually surprised PS3 is only 8million units behind 360. Giving 360 a 40% lead over PS3.

I do wonder howmany of the 360's purchased are replacements for dead machine though.

In fairness Bob, it's hardly MS fault if people go out and by a replacement 360 when their original is still covered under RROD, if people are willing to go buy another one you can't blame MS.

Also I believe the 360 was only 6 or 7 million units ahead up until September, so MS pulled back around a 2 million advantage in about 4 months.

Here in France, since the last price cut, the Xbox 360 crushed the PS3 in sales. Before that, the PS3 was leading, but it isn't the case anymore.

Only 28 million? Microsoft should take a leaf out of Stringer's book and combine their Xbox 360 sales with their Xbox sales. Maybe even add it in the sales figures for their Windows operating system over the years. That would make things look even better!
