PlayStation platform holder claims that holiday hardware sales showed year-on-year gains
Following SCEE president’s David Reeves upbeat forecast of the year ahead for PlayStation, fellow executives have praised the achievements of the business in the last 12 months and predicted a bumper year ahead for PS3.
SCEA vice president Ian Jackson stated: “We’ve had a solid holiday season and have delivered consistent growth throughout this year.
“Early internal data points to an increase of more than 130 percent of PS3 hardware sales for the holiday season – since Black Friday – and we’re also seeing a growth of nearly 40 per cent in total PS3 hardware sales for the calendar year. We remain confident this momentum will continue into the New Year.
"2008 was a pivotal year for PlayStation with the best software line-up in the industry, a dramatic expansion of PSN including the launches of the video delivery service and the beta of the PlayStation Home."
SCEE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida added: “2009 will be the year of big, exclusive PS3 titles.
“Just to name a few, the year will start with the much anticipated launch of Killzone 2, followed by a fresh, new take on the superhero/anti-hero open sandbox genre inFamous, a mind-bending thriller Heavy Rain, a massive 256 player simultaneous online shooter MAG, an augmented reality, virtual pet in your room experience EyePet, and some more big titles that we have not even announced yet.”

Pivotal
I agree, 2008 was a pivotal year for 2008. The release of Haze was one of the highlights for me, and it's success continues to this day. I'm looking forward to Haze 2 some time in 2009!!!
I also can't wait for my pre-order demo of Killzone 2!!!
It's a good time to be a UK PS3 owner!
Re: Pivotal
Not sure I agree regarding Haze being a "good game", but each to their own. Having participated in the Killzone 2 beta though I must say it DOES deserve the hype. It is simply an amazing game.
Re: Re: Pivotal
it probably is a good year to be a PS3 owner but that is maybe if you compare things this year and what is on the horizon to what occurred in 2008. Hopefully MCV won't have to report on Sony taking a year to get key titles out this year like they did with Home every minute. Although there are some really good games coming out this year i don't think any will compare to the hype surrounding the new Halo title or the new GTA IV expansion mark my words on that.
Hmm... *scratches chin*
Hmm...
Then what were those reports a month or so ago about how the PS3 had seen sales increase of just 8% (around the Black Friday time).
I just simply don't trust Sony when they bring up their own sales figures anymore. Early 2008 they said the PS3 had done a 100% sales increase from the sales of the year before, but they hadn't at all. It was more like a 10% increase.
Can't find the link to the site that pointed it out now though.
Re: Hmm... *scratches chin*
I also am very optimistic about 2009. It is my belief that in 2009 ps3 sales will overtake the Xbox 360 sales. Fantastic range of exclusives on offer! Ps3 definetely has a promising future, lets hope those ps2 owners yet to purchase a current generation console will realise that the ps3 is the best console with the brightest future!
Re: G
Not trust Sony G? And whose to say we can trust Microsoft any better? I'll bet they're all as bad as each other at massaging the figures for their own advantage & some PR spin..
Re: Re: G
Hmmmmm, that sounds like a good line-up. Killzone 2 won't live up to they hype (hell, it'll probably be presented in Sony's "glorious" 720p "high definition" output.) Heavy Rain is looking awesome, and I'm a big fan of Fahrenheit so that one genuinely excites me. MAG!?!? 256 player simultaneous!?!? Blimey Sony, you can't even get a 12 player Call Of Duty Match to finish on a regular basis on the useless PSN servers - how the hell is that ever going to work. And a virtual pet "EyePet" game!?!? Well, Sony have never stolen ANY ideas from Nintendo have they. God that sounds about as good as Eye Of Judgement.
God Sony, please get us the GTA IV content. Please make up with Valve and get us Left 4 Dead. Please sort out Home and put something on there that a) works, and b) is even half approaching enjoyable. Try fixing the existing problems before creating a generation of new ones.
