'50% off' sale begins at Zavvi this Friday

Retailer to slice at least a fifth off price of ALL products in store

Zavvi will cut prices of all items in store by up to 50 per cent from Friday, January 9th.

According to the firm's administrator Ernst & young, the further reductions will come off prices that have already been discounted.

Unlike Woolworths' end-of-life sale, which left many shoppers annoyed at the small reductions on entertainment products, Zavvi has promised 20-50 per cent will be cut from prices of ALL items in store.

Just spoke to a lady in Zavvi Brighton and this does not include consoles, so much for it being everything.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for letting us know. We'll follow this up. Ernst & Young told MCV it was all product lines.

Cheers,
Tim

I bet they did.

The Zavvi website includes an asterisk that says game consoles, iPods and Virgin Mobile goods are excluded from their sale.

You shouldn't be allowed to have 'money off everything' sales if you are willingly excluding items - especially items that people would actively travel to the store to buy at a discount.

You all shouldn't be complaining. Some of us lost our jobs due to this mess. The Xbox360s are already cheaper than any other store (unless you want Kung Fu Panda in a ****ty bundle) I'll be picking up my Xbox soon to help support them.

Yes sales are nice, but that doesn't give everyone the right to be a VULTURE!

@ Gryphie

Nobody is denying the fact that job losses are harsh; I'm sure we can all appreciate that many people are losing their jobs across all sectors due to the financial state of the country.

What we ARE 'complaining' about (if you can call making a story comment a complaint) is false advertising - and whether you're in administration or not, duping the consumer is never acceptable.

Checked the store in peterborough - they said no console or chart games are included. Just a con to try and get you into store. Rather buy online and save that way! Their loss!

if zavvi do this right and clear all the older stock the may be able to pull this back and pay the bills. but dont discount the main stock thats making money. as a indie store we need the big guys to keep the market stable and stop the supermarkets taking over. we hope everybody learns from these mistakes

Some products particularly consoles and chart software are still owned by the respective suppliers based on 'Retention of Title' contracts. There would be some small print somewhere to cover this but anyhow what can anyone do about false advertising if it was the case you can't sue a defunct company

"as a indie store we need the big guys to keep the market stable and stop the supermarkets taking over"
--------------

The problem there is that consumers are more interested in price than place, so if the supermarkets provide the best price, that's where people will shop.

Games are very expensive, and supermarkets are often willing to sell at a loss in order to attract consumers. This won't work forever, as you cannot be a loss-leader indefinitely, but it will work in the short run, and sadly that may put many small shops out of business.

How can it be false advertising? Zavvi, and the majority of other retailers list excepted items on advertisments, and websites etc when they announce sales covering 'everything'.

Get a grip go to Zavvi and see what bargains are to be had tomorrow, what you save on otehr products should make up for the standard console pricing, must'nt it?

i work for virgin media in a concession and before i left today i saw what is actually being reduced, no extra discounts on games hardware or ipods and none on virgin media, the only things in their sale that will be 50% off initially is vinyl at our store they don't even sell vinyl!!! its not gonna be fun tomorrow, i personally hold the managment at zavvi responsible because even until i left today they are claiming all the debt is paid, and a certain regional manager for them keeps saying that its business as usual.

Rob in Cambridge. You make me sick. "Comment" or "complaint" i agree with Gryphie you are just a selfish Vulture. Stick your "false advertising" whinges where the sun don't shine. Other people have more pressing concerns at the moment.

I went to the Zavvi on Oxford Street just before Christmas when they started to promote their first round of discounts and earlier this week when they promoted a further 10% of everything (except consoles, ipods, etc.) but they had put the prices up from the pre-Christmas prices. So, for example, DVDs that were in 2 for £25 bundles pre-Christmas were now on sale for £18 each with 10% off, hardly huge savings. It will be interesting to see what the offers are tomorrow, given they still have titles like COD4 at £45.

Vulture Hunter... "Other people have more pressing concerns at the moment."

Then perhaps you should go and deal with them then, as opposed to ranting at comments on an online news story...?

At what point is it selfish to address issues about advertising laws?

Not every comment has to be doom and gloom. Just because we don't address job losses in every post, doesn't mean we don't empathise with the situation.

"Yes sales are nice, but that doesn't give everyone the right to be a VULTURE!"

I've no sympathy with Zavvi's management thanks to the way they flogged people gift vouchers and then, the day before people would have wanted to spend them, they pulled the administration stunt.

Despicable isn't too strong a word, quite how a company that you owe 100 odd million to not wanting to supply you any more can be blamed for zavvi going into admin is beyond me, bad management and clearly an insolvent business.

Clearly this is a ruse to clear old stock, there's little in the way of bargains (fair enough) so keep your money to yourself and shop around, Zavvi are already the most expensive on the high street and thats how they got into the mire in the first place.

It's all right saying "save us from supermarkets" but where will you all be shopping for your food? will you be paying a premium to an indie or will you be buying whatevers chepest in the supermarket?

t's ok that people want a deal but please think how you would feel if it was you in the same situation.

"prices have actually been put up at liv st zavvi, e.g lost odyseey £45?? , too human £37 who are they kidding?"

I work in Zavvi and manage the games section in my store. These prices have been the same for the past 6+ months. They haven't been put up at all.

I'm sick of all the VULTURES coming in to stores and complaining about stuff like that when they clearly never usually shop there.

A prime example being the idiot walking around with his family and telling them we've put the prices up to put them back down. The usual xmas clearout started on the 23rd Dec. All the stock that was in the sale DROPPED IN PRICE. I know. I went around with sale reports and stickered it. Then in the last few weeks the 10% and now further 20/30% reductions were added.

I don't get it. How much discount do you want!? People will never be happy unless we're just handing them stock for free.

"Checked the store in peterborough - they said no console or chart games are included"

Consoles/Hardware are not included but all Chart Stock is.
Whoever told you that is incorrect.

My only gripe with this is that chart prices never stay the same on a weekly basis and are awlays changed AD HOC. Which is the same as any other store but causes problems when people dont buy something straight away and then come back when the price has changed and complains.

blah blah vulture this vulture that. don't bore me. i'm sorry about your jobs, truly. but if i'm still a consumer, and i still care about where i can get my products for the cheapest. therefore, i reserve the right to say "i'm not shopping at zavvi, as the sale is bogus, and whilst we're on the topic i think it's stunts like this that created financial problems for them". what? you think i'm gonna spend the little money i own in zavvi out of principle? it's not a charity. and similarly, i still have the right to go in there, look at prices, and walk out again - despite the fact that i wasn't a loyal/regular customer to begin with. the reason for never going into zavvi was because it was too expensive to begin with - that shold indicate something. i will only go in every now and then to see if they are having a sale LIKE THE BIG STUPID SIGNS SAY. they're meant to bring people in off the street you fools.. your shop NEEDS these people.
anyway, i just want to finish with this:
it's not necessarily the fact that the general public are "vultures", when they walk around and mumble to themselves (or family) about overpriced stock. it's the fact that they KNOW that this company is trying to TRICK them. consider this:
Mirrors Edge prices after Zavvi had problems and announced a "clearance" sale with huge reductions:-
HMV: £25... GAME: £20.... ZAVVI: £40
same thing goes for Batman:-
HMV: £25.... GAME: £25..... ZAVVI: £35
WAKE UP!!!!!!!
