2K boss explains where companies are ‘going wrong’ on Nintendo formats
The global boss of 2K has predicted that publishers bringing non-licensed games to Wii this year could struggle – as the console’s market is “flooded by crappy titles”.
Speaking to MCV, Christoph Hartmann said that his company would find it difficult to secure the success it has enjoyed with its Carnival game if it had to release it today.
He said: “Where people go wrong in the casual market is that, while the development costs are exploding on the casual side, they’re treating the Wii like the old PC market – making cheap, accessible games. They think if they make ten titles and two are hits, they will finance the other eight.
“But they forget these eight crappy titles will flood the market and will lead to problems in terms of production – and upset retailers. Also, the consumer will be pissed off because they’ll be confused.”
Of 2K’s own success on Wii with Carnival, Hartmann said that getting the title early to market was key.

He added: “Had we released it last week, it would have been much tougher. There’s far too much stuff in the Wii market [now] and it’s hard to shine. While the Wii is the strongest growing console, it’s a risk not to have well known brands in your games.”

i agree
there are so many wii titles, most are copies of sports or mini games trying to cash in on previous titles sucess.
However wii customers do not buy games in the same way xbox360 and Ps3 customers do, they wont come in release day for a new title, unless its a mario game, or official Nintendo title. Wii may lead the console sales but the games do not sell many units, unlike the real Next gen consoles.
Load of rubbish
This 2K boss is speaking absolute rubbish. Peope won't buy Wii games if they are a load of ****, which the non-Nintendo ones are. The amount of people who buy Wiis but don't want to play rubbish like "Carnival Games" is high. Any good Wii game will sell gangbusters, just as any one which isn't awful or a complete pisstake port will sell at least moderately. Case in point: the Conduit looks crap but has a lot of hype because there is no competition. Carnival Games actually sold well, because it seems to present a decent-ish game for children who don't know any better. Had that steaming pile of rubbish been released on 360 and PS3 it would have sold northing and that is a fact. Wii gamers want original, fun games, and perhaps some that use the full graphics potential, such as Smash Bros for example.Developers like this are too thick to make them, just as they were too thick to realise the Wii would be a success when it was bloody obvious in 2005/6. If they ported any game which would get more than 6/10 from a decent reviewer, it'd sell at least 3 million immediately because millions of Wii owners are gagging for stuff to play. There were no good 3rd party Wii games in 2006-7. Every last one was either shovelware, or a cash in. RE4 Wii is a joke-a Gamecube game with no improvements selling for near full price. Guitar Hero had MONO SOUND FOR GOD'S SAKE. Everythign else was a PS2 port with awful cotnrols because they didn't design the game around such controls and didn't know how to code for it anyway. No that that should be difficult but as long as fools like this decide Wii is only good for very cheap, cash in games like Carnival Games, they will only do moderately well and what should have been the greatest console ever will just end up stopping Microsoft from gaining more casual support in a mutually destructive market, made so by the farcical idiocy of developers who ignore the fastest selling, and broadest appealing console ever made.
(BTW 2008 3rd party games=rushed Japanese games, which, while decent, were far too childish to appeal to the adults in the family who are one of the Wii's key targets, a target rapidly slipping from sight as developers leave the Wii a wasteland in terms of software releases, one that Nintendo, and the handful of small devs who are beginning to support WiiWare, alone can not populate with any decent number of titles.
Re: Load of rubbish
No good games will be made because cheap casual games have sold so well.
No cheap casual games will sell, because the people who buy them already have enough games to play to keep them happy.
This mistake is publishers trying to sell as many games as possible.
...yeah, you heard right. What they should be doing is building different kinds of games (that ideally won't compete with each other too much) to the right budget aiming for a realistic number of sales.
Don't hold you're breath. They ain't that smart.
Re: Re: Load of rubbish
I think it rather depends on the sole publishers strategy. It could be worth to produce 10 rubbish titles, each with a budget of 300K. Doing so, you will adopt all further activities like marketing, production etc.. fitting your strategy.
It could also be the publishers strategy to produce one 3000 K title with high quality. I see, that there are customers for both titles. But of course the publishers strategies have to vary and of course the threat of massively cheap titles is higher for the publisher, relying on one single product. But also here could be the advantage, that well produced + designed games have sold mostly well.
Key is as somebody before mentioned already - the timing. To jump on the Wii-train right now is crazy I find. Finally it will be the same story as it was with GBA and DS. Nintendo wins double time: having their own brands selling well and making a lot of money with licensing for thousands of crappy titles :)
To beat Nintendo on its own platform, publishers have to be brave and invent new genres and game plays. Most stuff I see are bad rip-offs of something that sold good in the past. Without any risk, how could you expect a big upside?
Too Many Crap Games
Here's how I explain it...
If you go to GameRankings.com and set the review threshold to "1" you'll be able to pull a pretty decent list of games for any console and any year.
There were 295 titles released on the Wii in 2008.
Of those 295, 31 scored 80% or better on average from reviewers. 203 scored less than 70%.
That means for every game worth considering there were 6.55 games that were more or less crap.
If you look at the Xbox 360 and PS3 it shapes up like this:
360:
80% and up - 49
Under 70% - 116
1 good game for every 2.37 bad games.
PS3:
80% and up - 50
Under 70% - 67
1 good game for every 1.34 bad games.
To put it in perspective, the Xbox 360 and PS3 combined had 183 bad games. That's 20 fewer than the Wii had by itself.
Re: Re: Re: Load of rubbish
to henry ford...
you have missed the fact that alot of games sell more on wii nowdays, even with 360 and ps3 combined.
guitar heroe world tour
wii= 2.1 million
360=1.5 million
shaun white snow boarding
wii=770 k
360=500k
sonic unleashed
wii=750 k
360=400 k
etc
it used to be that only nintendo games sold well not anymore.
You should check your facts somewhere else then on an 360 gamers site lol
Re: Re: Re: Re: Load of rubbish
To games fan - your point about games selling better on PS3 and 360 combined is a pretty basic example ok i mean with the exception of Guitar Hero games like Sonic unleashed and Shaun Wright aren't exactly games that PS3 and 360 owners are going to be marking on there calender as key releases are they. I would definitely say it is fair to say that there are better range of games to play compared to the Wii so obviously games like Sonic unleashed are going to be more sought after by Wii owners than anyone else as statistically there are so many bad games on Wii that anything nearly decent will be snapped up by Wii owners and less so by PS3 and 360 owners as there are much better games on these platforms.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Load of rubbish
While looking at review scores please remember that the typical review score on any Nitnedno console is on average much lower than on a Sony or Microsoft console. There have been many articles written to try and discover why this happens but it is true. If you slide your 80% back to 60% the number are about even and it is mostly because of this bias.
I'm not sure it is a fair assumption for Christoph to say that the games are crap - especially if it is just because he doesn't like them either. I'd like to hear more about what 2K is going to do about it, not complaints.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Load of rubbish
Hartmann is 110% correct shame other labels cant make as many great games as 2K. Thank you Christoph for Carnival and Bioshock, truly great games the man is ahead of his time
The guy has a point...
This guy from 2K games has a point. I manage a high profile video game retail store in the UK, and some of the pure drivel that has gone on the Wii this year has been, honestly, baffling. I mean, a good idea of Wii's Christmas line-up this year was....
- Guiness World Records - The Game
- Funfair Party
- Babysitting Party
- Wonderworld Amusement Party
- High School Musical Dance
- Golden Balls
- More Game Party
- TV King Party
- Movie King Party
- Dog's Island
- Carnival Games Mini Golf
- Imagine Champion Rider
- Hasbro Game Party
- My Pet Hotel
- Order Up
- Popstar Guitar
- Littlest Pet Shop
- Family Trainer
- Shrek's Carnival Craze
- Bratz Girlz Really Rock
I mean, for God's sake. Look at some of the crap out in 2009....
- Calvin Tucker's Redneck Jamboree (?!?!)
- Monkey Mischief
- Olympigs Party Games
- Music Party - Rock The House
Many decent or even half-decent Wii games were lost at retail - very disappointing numbers for Wii Music, Animal Crossing and the like. Multi-format titles like FIFA and Need For Speed flopped on the Wii (and quite rightly, really). My point is, if EA can't sell Need For Speed on the Wii to all the chav kids whose mum's thought the Wii would "get 'em some excercise, innit!" what hope does any developer working on a unique game have?
Despite the fact these crap games are, well, crap, sadly they all sold pretty good amounts. The Wii is fast becoming as despised as the PS3, as gamers abandon it in their droves at the lack of decent software out or in development. And that just leaves the chav's and the casual gamers. And those people buy the sort of crap they release on the Wii. The guy from 2K, come to think of it, is absolutely right. The more crap that gets churned out, the more developers will have to rely on brand names to sell their products.
I give the Wii bubble 12 months to burst at this rate. The casual gamers will tire of the endless mini-game compilations soon, and with hardcore gamers moving to 360 and even PS3, the Wii will be superceded before either of those 2.
You heard it here first, mon amis.
Re: Babysitting Party
Babysitting Party?! What's next for the Wii, Watching Paint Dry Party?
Re: Re: Babysitting Party
Babysitting Party - it's REAL. I promise! AND, if the title alone isn't good enough - it's even compatible with the Wii Board!!!!! I mean, really.........?
Love the Wii
Its plain and simple the Wii really is a console for hardcore gamers. The Wii has plenty of fun games to play and that is what I feel Nintendo was looking for, the younger (6-12) or not so hardcore games.(parents of said 6-12yos) Get off Nintendos back, they are selling what they want, if you want to kill someone with a handgun and steal his car then buy a Xbox or PS3. If you want to have a good laugh with a few friends and family buy the Wii.
The Wii is Fine
We finally have a game system that offers clean & extremely fun games & you have corny people that are filled with trash who don't know what to do with themselves because they have a game system that does not offer blood, sex, & violence. Go watch a trash can! I'm sure you would find it much more thrilling because that's what you basically fill yourself with when you play the other dirt games!!! I say get over yourself because the Will is hot and will stay HOT!
rere
I've seen this column more than once get over it and buy games which interest you and the trash will die out. I've you can't get games into gamers hands down whine when others do. If your games are good they will sell.
Crazy
I can't believe he thinks the games are bad. The Wii is the best console made so far. Nintendo should be proud. Super Smash Bros Brawl is the best game for the Wii. I have so many games I like for the Wii, NONE of them are bad at all. I can't understand why he says this. THE WII IS THE BEST!!!
here's a thought
the wii games get lower ratings because they aren't the typical games the other systems are coming out with--they are a broader view so they attract a broader scale of people which is what you're suppose to want to do right? not to mention they may not have some of the more popular games made up so you can play them on the wii system because most wii games are suppose to make you get up and move or really think which most other games for other game systems do not. you really can not compare the wii games to any other games for whatever other game system because they are really in two different catagories. i personally have played xbox often and played mostly shooter games but i have recently started playing the wii more often and there is an obvious difference but the wii and its games are definately not worse, just different. the wii is more focused on finding and producing games for everyone and bringing them together, while other systems are more narrowed and do not necessarily have games everyone can play and play all together. so in my opinion from a little 19 year old girl--the other systems are flawed in a much worse way.
Re: Re: Re: Babysitting Party
I honestly don't see any problems with wii games I find the wii games a good thing for kids when you look at xbox 360 and psp or ps2 or ps3 there games are about killing people and gangs and violence when i look at wii games I see there is no serious gang violence like in the xboxes and ps2 and ps3 and psp I think the games for wii are fine at least they have something out there that is not violent for kids I would not want my kids playing those stupid gang and killing people games I think that xboxes and PlayStation games are a bad INFLUENCE ON KIDS while Nintendo is thinking about kids they are giving kids good influence on life while Xboxes and PlayStation is giving kids bad influence and giving them the wrong idea on life i love Nintendo at least Nintendo knows that violent games are bad for kids to play.... so instead of thinking about your selfish self think about the kids for once and that is what nintendo is doing thinking about kids and at least the wii keeps kids active does Xboxes and PlayStation keep your kids active no they dont they teach your kids the wrong **** in life, they teach them about being violent and I personally think that is bull **** and I hope Nintendo don't change there games to gang violence.. because you assholes have to complain about there games well get this ****ers there are kids out there that need to have a active game system like the wii and games that are not only about gang violence if I had the say so what games could be out i would make damn sure the games that were violent would be recalled... so instead of thinking about only the adults out there, why don't you think about the kids that need a good influence from wii? why don't you assholes think about that one?... there are kids too you know!!!!!!!
And it took this long...
I agree to and not only are the games crappy the graphics could be much better to, not to forget to mention that allot of games give you no choice but to use that stupid wii-mote....Now call me old school but for some games you just want the option ofbeing able to use a regular controller, just my opinion...Bottom line is I bought the wii because of the new mario kart umm yeah double dash for the game cube is way better and I'm so disappointed with everything about it...anyway now I have a PS3 and love it, hey NINTENDO make a new Mario Kart Double Dash for the Wii and this time DO IT RIGHT...!!!!!
Dissapointed
The wii has some nice games wich i am sure the fans consumed. Well, i liked twilight princess and mario galaxy and that is about it. From day one i suported nintendo and the fact of the matter is that even i, as a long time fan have to admit that the wii is truelly a dissapointment to the core fans that helped nintendo become what they are today... When they fucked up mario kart wii the way they did i felt it comming. Right then i knew they forgot about the true fans. The only thing nice about the wii is that you can play the classics on it, to remind you that nintendo really once was the best of the best, but today this is no longer the issue. I know a lot of core nintendo fans that are also dissapointed with the wii and some of them sold theirs for an xbox 360 or a ps3. This seems a better choice as the days go by.
Gamers are discriminated or something
The problem with gaming today is that it's divided between *Junior* games like Babysitting Party or Grand Theft Auto that's full of unmoral violence that feeds on the negative energies of the world like a vacuum gone crazy.
Then people take sides discriminating each other instead of problem solving which requires *brain power* but nobody can even attempt to try to reason anymore.
Instead we have to blow each others brains out on the internet where an Xbot fan uses his GTA AK-42 assualt rifle while the Nintendobot uses Links Master Sword and Gale Boomerange at each other as if the other were a demon from hell.
There is no *in-between* stages like the older Need for Speed franchise or Zelda series type stuff out..........well except for Zelda or any one of RareWare adventure games.
The older NFS had street racing but it didn't teach you to go shoot up cops or steal cars and you could play as *Be The Cop* mode on some versions when there was police chases which were actually funner then NSFMW. :P
United we stand,Divded we fall. :(
I am going to bed as I am very tired. *insert big yawn here*
Good night and may you dream of that perfect Playstation/Nintendo/Xbox/PC/Atari360 video game.
Atari360?????????????? X:o *axe on Mr Truth*
*Mr Truth switches off the lights to 'There Are Too Many Crappy Games On Wii' room* and drives away in his Blue go-kart using the unlimited mushrooms from Double Dash and double dashes away!.
