European Wii sales hit 14.2m units

DS console sales break 31 million following record-breaking 2008 performance

Nintendo has sold 8.3 million units of its Wii console in 2008, making it the largest annual home console seller in European history.

The figure is a 58 per cent increase over 2007, and takes the total European Wii installed base to 14.2 million units.

Nintendo’s DS also broke European records by selling over 11.2 million units in 2008, which happens to be the largest annual sales figure for any games console in European history. The DS has now sold 31 million units in Europe.

“The sales trend on both Wii and Nintendo DS, hardware and software during 2008 shows that more and more people in Europe are enjoying video games as part of their daily lives,” said Nintendo of Europe MD, Marketing and PR Laurent Fischer.  “This proves that Nintendo’s wish to expand the gaming population has strong potential in Europe.”
