NPD: Nintendo shatters records in 2008

Wii smashes US annual platform sales records whilst DS does the same in December

Nintendo was the main beneficiary of a record-breaking year for the video games market in North America last year, with Wii breaking the record for the number of unit sales enjoyed by a single platform in one year – 10.17m units.

In addition to this, DS shattered the territory’s monthly sales record after selling over three million units in December.

“Our type of entertainment has now moved to the point where there is no longer a question that if you offer consumers an expanded definition of what a video game can be, and deliver that idea with quality and affordability in mind,” Nintendo of America’s executive VP of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway stated.

“Concepts like Wii Fit, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band never would have seemed feasible just a few years ago, and now they’re driving growth for our the entire industry.”
