Source close to Sony belittles latest speculation concerning technical specs of handheld successor
Clearly the rumour won’t go away until the day a new machine is finally announced, but again overnight talk has emerged of alleged details of Sony’s PSP 2 – and again, sources at Sony have completely denied them.
IGN states that “several credible sources” have told it that PSP 2 is nearing, boasting multi-touch screen technology similar to that popularised by Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch. Also touted is Bluetooth support, integrated hard drive and integrated GPS.
However, a source close to Sony has told MCV that: “Clearly, being a quiet time of year, many, what we thought to be credible websites, are making up stories about PSP2, and how it allows you to teleport across the globe, travel through time, and will be powered by the horns of baby rhinoceroses.
“Hopefully, you can sense a mild tone of sarcasm, which should hopefully indicate how ‘on the money’ IGN are. Needless to say, we don't comment on rumour or speculation, but this is nonsense.”

Sony Confirmation!
"it allows you to teleport across the globe, travel through time, and will be powered by the horns of baby rhinoceroses."
QFT! PSP2 functions confirmed.
Re: Sony Confirmation!
LOL
Re: Sony Confirmation!
Yeah... but how much will it cost? I was filling my penny jar as an insurance policy for the oncoming, impending doom of a global economic downturn... but upon hearing of the PSP2's teleportation and time-travel functionality, how can I pass that up?
Re: Sony Confirmation!
Wouldn't it be funny if the IGN sources are correct and the device gets announced imminently. It wouldn't look too smart for the chap quoted here. :P Sony is actually one of the better companies at keeping secrets a lot of the time. I remember how few people knew about the PSP announcement at E3 2003 in advance - including, well, sources close to Sony. It was a surprise to most.
Not knowing anything either way, while it may seem unlikely SCE would be putting anything more into hardware R&D right now (for reasons that should be obvious to everyone reading the site), I'd say stranger things have happened. And the supposed sweeping changes to be made to Sony Corp have not yet been revealed or put into effect.
Re: Re: Sony Confirmation!
It's an anonymous source-off! This comment from Kotaku Managing Editor Brian Crecente sums up MCV's 'retort' pretty well:
"The only thing better than an anonymous source, is an anonymous source lacking the backbone to put their face with the backhands they want to deliver to a publication. The best part is that despite the acrimony, MCV never gets around to having their source really deny the PSP2 rumor."
And didn't the MD of PlayStation UK dismiss rumors of a portable PlayStation THE DAY BEFORE it was announced by Sony Japan? The UK team seem to be the last to know.
Re: Re: Re: Sony Confirmation!
You mean, apart from the bit where our source says "this is nonsense"?
Good work Kotaku!
Re: Re: Sony Confirmation!
Is no-one considering the implications of powering the device with the horns of baby rhinoceroses'... Those badboys are hard to come by. The mothers are pretty protective over their young!
Re: Re: Re: Sony Confirmation!
I find the words "IGN" and "credible" in the same sentence quite amusing.
