Microsoft insists Zune is here to stay

Spokesman claims “Zune continues to evolve and we are committed to the business”

Following speculation that Microsoft could be looking to ditch its MP3 player Zune following a severe drop in sales, the platform holder has told MCV that it is committed to its digital music brand.

A spokesperson for the firm told MCV: “Zune now has over three million devices, and more importantly more than two million people on Zune Social, and continued momentum in winning critical reviews, which is a big milestone for us. We are committed to the Zune business.

“Zune continues to evolve as an end-to-end digital entertainment service for consumers. Our spring update added video to the marketplace, with over 1200 episodes for sale. We also launched in Canada, and continue to look at other markets as we build scale across the business.

“As we look forward, we envision the Zune service delivering compelling digital entertainment experiences across a number of endpoints or ‘tuners’ – Zune as a mobile service is interesting, as is Xbox Live, Media Center, Windows Live and others.

“The overall point is that Zune is built to put the consumer at the center of a rich set of entertainment experiences, and those will grow and evolve over time.”

I don’t doubt that many or even most Zune owners are satisfied with what they have. Here’s my thing: Apple dove into the MP3 market when that market was already well on its way to maturity. The iPod quickly made a big splash, and iTunes has played no small part in helping the iPod acquire a 70% market share. Apple did not engage in illegal, monopolistic business practices in order to achieve that level of prominence; nor did Steve Jobs hypnotize buyers, steering them towards the iPod.

When the iPod was released in October of 2001, it succeeded during a recession caused by the terrorist attacks of 9/11. If the current economic climate adversely affected the Zune and other consumer products, then it stands to reason that it also adversely affected iPod sales. Yet, Apple reported a growth in iPod sales for the most recent quarter, versus a 54% drop in Zune revenues. How much better would the iPod have faired this quarter without the deepening recession?

I believe that Microsoft and its investors need to re-evaluate the Zune with regard to how it affects other products, and how it affects shareholder interests. If I’m a Microsoft competitor — and I don’t believe that Apple and Microsoft compete in the sense that they appeal to very different groups of customers — then I truly hope that Microsoft continues to throw money and other resources at the Zune. Let them and their investors learn the hard way. Again.

Bring to EU already

I'm disgusted by the fact that they've yet to release the Zune in the EU yet.

I got a Zune for Xmas and have yet not been able to use half of the cababilities. I'm not even able to register it because it detects that my IP address is in EU. This is ridiculous for a company like MS. One to the biggest SW manufactuers in the world.

Don't get me wrong I love the Zune itself, i find it more enjoyable than an iPod and feels less likely to break and a lot harder to lose. But it's about time to move into EU and more so UK and Ireland Markets.

Well

Someone needs to be a stable alternative to the ipod with its own digital music store and zune has done that for a while now. The device needs a physical update but the software is solid and easy to use. A touch screen version is a must and improved marketing strategies. The zune as it is now could be described as being in the xbox1 stage. A make-over and marketing push with social connection and song sharing front and center will make it more appealing. Just like the xbox 360 and xboxlive surprised everyone after the rough start of the unprofitable first xbox. ( O and make the xbox360 and zune "better friends" or more compatible with each other)

Try rolling it out to UK and other countries, if apple had just released Ipod in the USA thet wouldn't be where they are today. Microsoft has base and abilites to launch this world wide, and should stop bitching low sales.
