EA: FIFA 09 sells 7.8m units

Rock Band 2, Left 4 Dead, Mirror’s Edge and Dead Space all top a million but Need for Speed suffers annual loss

As part of its Q3 financial statement, EA has named FIFA 09 as its top performing title of Q3 2008, with sales topping an impressive 7.8m units worldwide – four per cent up on the performance of FIFA 08 the year before.

The publisher’s second best seller, surprisingly, was Littlest Pet Shop, with global sales in the period of 2.8m units – a strong performance for a new IP and a sign that the casual market is growing in importance.

Rock Band 2 sold 1.9m copies and Valve’s Left 4 Dead 1.8m. Also in the one million sellers club were new IP duo Dead Space and Mirror’s Edge, as well as annual sports updates Madden NFL 09 and NBA Live 09.

EA added that its MMO title Warhammer Online now enjoys over 300,000 subscribers in North America and Europe.

As for Need for Speed: Underground, it’s 5.2m unit sales sound impressive (and make it the firm’s second nest selling title of Q3 2008), but EA lamented the fact sales were seven per cent on its predecessor, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, despite an increase in European sales. EA recently announced a complete overhaul of its racing franchise.

Can someone explain to me why nfs was a failure at 5.2 million sales I cant understand it surely thats good if it sold three times more than left 4 dead. Of course sales are going to fall in the current economic climate so I dont see the problem.

Bare in mind NFS is on all consoles, where as L4D is just on the the Xbox. So that could explain a little more for you.
