Gears of War writer hints at Gears of War 3 in ten year plan for Epic and Microsoft’s popular games franchise

Aside from Epic’s recent news about its upcoming third update for Gears of War 2, all is relatively quiet in the Gears of Wars universe – but an admission from one of the game’s key writers suggests that Epic and Microsoft have plenty of Gears surprises on the way.

IGN reports that Gears of War 2 writer Joshua Ortega told attendees at the recent New York Comic-Con event that: “You will not be disappointed in the next ten years. It's a ten-year plan. Gears is long-term. The lancer is the new lightsaber.”

He also hinted that the immediate future could bring some new single player DLC to Microsoft’s title, though sadly no news of Gears of War 3 was mentioned.

Along with Gears of War 2, Ortega’s CV includes work on comic hits such as Spider-Man, Star wars Tales and The Necromancer, as well as the successful novel ((FREQUENCIES)).

what's a lancer? Apart from a car...
forgive my ignorance but since when did a secondary weapon in a fair to middling video game franchise (ooo contravertial) become more iconic than a Jedi's laser sword...?
Nonsense claims...
I'm no star wars fan boy but I can guarantee that a lancer will not overtake a Light saber in terms of iconic weapons amongst the mainstream audience...

I'm sure Yoda would have something to say about Ortega's arrogance.

When does this start? There's nothing in Gears 1 or 2 to suggest that there's any kind of storyline depth going on there that they'll be able to draw on. I don't dislike Gears but it appears Epic are confusing sales figures with consumer interest in the mythos. It sells because of the marketing, the muscle, and the gore. There's very little substance of note in the backstory. If they try and hang a complex storyline around it, it'll fool no-one.

@1: Let me guess... PS3 owner (oooh, controversial) see how that sounds? To make a statement based on a controversy factor is like making no statement at all. It says "I'm going to diss the franchise because it will rile the fanboys". Anyone who actually is part of the industry on here is beyond the fanboy status (I would hope). Every developer works for all manufacturers at some point in their career, it's about the games, not the hardware. Had you been a developer, you would have realised that. If you are a developer, then you really should know better.

@3: I am sure Yoda would have much to say about people's ignorance too...

Is it so hard for people to understand associative references? Going off the responses here, I guess so.

Ortega didn't say that the Lancer was going to be BIGGER or BETTER than the Lightsabre, he said it would be the new lightsabre. The lightsabre was as much part of Star Wars as Star Wars was part of the lightsabre. What he probably means is that people will associate Gears of War as much with the Lancer, as they will associate the Lancer with Gears of War... it's not a difficult concept to grasp.

@5: Since when did a game need a storyline to keep a franchise around for 10 years or more? I don't see much continuity in the COD series, there's certainly not much depth to the Mario franchise... "The Princes has been captured, rescue her". And to be quite honest, the less mind-numbingly boring, overly-bloated, cut-scene filled MGS type franchises we have, the better.

Gears is a portable concept and as such, they can take the subject matter wherever they like in the fictional universe and retain a sense of continuity if they choose to do so. You just have to be able to see past the "OMG, they (appear to have) dissed Star Wars" presumption, to see it.

Gears of War, Call of Duty, Fifa, Grand Theft Auto...

Kill, drive, kick a pigs bladder. Yawn.....................

I remember when computer games were original.

It seems you have to be a spotty overspunked teenager with raging hormones and a desire to drive cars you'll never afford and hack people to death if you want any game design effort spent on you these days.

(cries) :'O(
