Analyst predicts that "iPod Touch could be final nail in PSP's coffin"
Sony’s surprise announcement of a number of big-hitting PSP titles yesterday proves that it remains firmly committed to its portable platform – but one analyst has said that Apple could yet prove to be a fatal thorn in Sony’s side.
Speaking to MCV’s sister site CasualGaming.biz today, Game Brief’s Nicholas Lovell stated: “The iPod Touch is rapidly becoming the portable media player of choice amongst a younger audience, exactly the place that Sony wanted to be with the PSP.
“But the iPod doesn’t have expensive processors or a unique format disc like the UMD; it is an easy-to-use device that offers consumers their music, podcasts, short-form video and accessible games on the move and in my opinion, will be the final nail in the PSP’s coffin.”

iPod vs PSP
psp is so ridiculously superior to any iFad product
Re: iPod vs PSP
As an iPhone and PSP owner I can see the value of both machines. For ease of use, iPhone is hard to beat. For music, video and non-gaming applications its a great piece of kit. As a proper gamer, I find the gaming experience of iPhone no more than a passing distraction. The gaming experience on PSP is much superior not least because it has an analogue stick.
I think Sony have realised that the PSP is largely dead as a multimedia device but they should keep it as a viable gaming platform. Sadly I think it'll be the DS and home consoles that will be to blame for its demise, not the iPhone/ iPod touch
Re: Re: iPod vs PSP
There are a few things that could be done to bring the PSP up with the iPhone/Touch. I also have both and have to say that if I could get my videos onto PSP without having to convert them a hundred times, I'd use my PSP far more often than I do.
The gaming on iPhone, while not as good, will probably be more than fine for the majority of the market. Just look at the tat they put out on DS!
The audio quality on iPhone is better than PSP (in fact, I'd go as far as to say the digital to analogue converters on the PSP are rubbish) but again, the mass market listens to MP3s now and I'm sure they won't be concerned with sound quality one bit.
While the PSP has it's failings in the media department (and only because of the STUPID video process), surely it wouldn't take more than a firmware update to add support for different types of video. That would give it a far better chance. The MPEG abilites have been so under played compared with the media-hub-deluge of everything that's been said about PS3.
Re: Re: Re: iPod vs PSP
iPod gaming will remain as novelty "tilt and shake" until they can add a tactile, off-screen button system to it.
It is impossible to play any serious arcade game when you cannot feel a button and your finger covers part of the screen.
The biggest problem the iPod/iPhone has now is the sheer amount of junk in the store. Nobody wants to wade through pages of garbage in the hope of finding something decent. You can't trust the reviews as the authors are writing some of them.
They need to categorise commercial and indie so there is at least some chance of spotting the serious games from the novelty junk.
One place where it does win though is portability, the PSP is anything but portable, unless you have pockets the size of Wales. And god help you if you put your PSP in a case.
@1: I think you'll find the fanboy sites that way >>> close the door behind you, thanks.
Re: Re: Re: Re: iPod vs PSP
Why the hell did the PSP not get an update to talk straight to the PS3 and store recorded TV shows from PlayTV on the PS3.
