New Wii controller unearthed

Listing on Nintendo’s Japanese portal pictures new Classic Controller Pro

Nintendo has quietly announced a new controller for the Wii on its Japanese site called the Classic Controller Pro.

On the face of it the device appears to be a standard Classic Controller with some sort of additional housing on the back, but the shift of the secondary shoulder button to the rear of the device, a la the Sony DualShock, shows that the device is indeed brand new.

With no official statement yet offered, speculation is rife as to what purpose the new joypad could serve. The Classic Controller is fondly regarded by gamers, but the more familiar layout of this new model could indicate an influx of new 3D games on Nintendo’s Virtual Console service.

Could this mean that downloadable GameCube games are on the way?

Doubt it

I doubt this means downloadable GameCube games are on the way. For one thing where would these games be stored? For another the Wii is already backwards compatible.

This is probably Nintendo simply wringing more cash out of the peirpheral market. Keep an eye out for the inevitable Classic Controller Pro Wii Motion Plus Edition ;-)

I suspect this could be a move to encourage devs to make games that are not confined to the Wiimote. By adding the dual analog sticks, they can now effectively duplicate Wiimote and Nunchuck functionality in one controller. Which might appeal to those who don't like the Wiimote controller. Could also be a sign that they recognise the need to get the more traditional gamer back on their side.

I don't have a classic controller yet, so this could be a good purchase.

@1: You mean like Sony saying "rumble is last gen and we don't need it" and then after a few million standard controllers had been bought, they announce the DualShock 3 for an additional £40 a time and encourage devs to add rumble support?

You can never have too many peripherals :D

I'm not getting my hopes up or anything, nor claiming this to be true, but I seem to remeber someone on the Streetfighter 4 development team saying a while beck that SF4 could concevibly fit on the Wii. What with all the fuss of the 360 and PS3 controllers (as in how crap they are, notably the 360 one) and the fact that the Snes Pad is the undisputed of choice as far as SF is concerned....you never know :D
