MCV AWARDS '09: The Finalists are announced

Nearly 40 companies are set to fight it out for the big prizes at the games industry's trade awards in April

The Finalists of the MCV Industry Excellence Awards have been announced – and now the countdown begins to the big event on Thursday April 23rd at The Brewery London.

With almost 40 companies in the running, Electronic Arts leads the way with seven finalists slots, whilst HMV, Activision, Microsoft and Nintendo boast five each.

GAME, Ubisoft and CHIPS have a chance in four categories. New names are featured too, such as The Hut, Lovefilm, Bethesda, Gameplayer, Rising Star, D3P, Media Molecule and Music Box Leisure.

Most awards are based on team, apart from the MCV Retail Advisory Board Special Recognition accolade, which rewards an individual for service to the games retail sector. The RAB Finalists this year are Darren Bowen (Ubisoft), Andy Yates (Nintendo), John Clark (Sega), Mark Howsen (Sony Computer Entertainment) and Jonathan Grimes (Microsoft).

"The MCV Awards continue to be fought over by an exciting mix of large and small companies, established companies, established players and newcomers," said MCV publisher Stuart Dinsey.

After so many years in this business we are blown away to be picking up so many nominations in the retail awards.
Given the strength of the competition it is fantastic.
Thanks to everyone and good luck to all

Don

Please tell me this list is a hoax!

Seriously MCV this list must be a mistake.

How can HMV get an innovation nomination for Re/Play! Pre-owned has been established in the market for years so it is hardly a new idea and hence innovative.

More insane than this is the fact that the games industry bleats on about the damage pre-owned does to their business yet here they are worshipping it. Just look in any of your publications for the past year and tell me I am wrong.

Seriously MCV what the **** are you up to. How big was that brown envelope they gave you... or maybe it is a reflection of the advertising revenue you get from HMV in your publication???

*******s, absolute *******s.

Hi Anakin,

One of the biggest entertainment retailers in the world launching its unique take on pre-owned – and nationwide at that – is an innovation in terms of both its business model and its ambitions in gaming.

There have been consumer games shows in the past, but Play.com Live seeing the opportunity and doing things differently was an innovation.

There have been games controllers in the past, but CHIPS going up against the big boys with its own-brand ranges is an innovation.

Shops have been selling games on the High Street for decades. Shall we stop commending them for doing it differently and better than they have before? No, of course not.

ps. To the best of my knowledge, HMV has never advertised in MCV. And when they contact us via post, they use nice white envelopes.

Very true Bob, my thoughts also, in this current climate where it's hitting the indies pocket the hardest, and the fact that all the bloody supermarkets are selling games as loss leaders why don't us indies get an award just for putting up with it all!
