JAPAN: R4 cards banned

Tokyo District Court grants an injunction against the sale of DS piracy aid

The infamous R4 card, a device that allows DS owners to play pirated games and homebrew applications, has been successfully banned from sale in Japan.

Kotaku
reports that the Tokyo District Court has granted an injunction against the manufacturers of the R4 that makes it illegal for it to be sold at retail. In response, Nintendo, Square Enix and Capcom have backed the decision, labelling the R4 as a “violation” of Japanese law.

Many retailers had reportedly already removed the device from shelves for fear of prosecution, but this new legal ruling should see it vanishing from the High Street altogether.

In addition, 54 companies are now pursuing manufacturers of similar devices with a view to outlawing them, too.

The move is likely to create both hope and anger amongst UK retailers, who will be looking for similar moves in this country but at the same time see the Japanese decision as vindication of their belief that not enough is being done to curb R4 sales in Europe.

Now the UK legislators need to move to make the same thing happen here - Amazon already removed third party sellers of the device.

Sick of "customers" wanting a DS just to use the R4 on it, who cheerfully inform me they don't want any games 'cause they'll get them for free.

People (as in buyers) just don't understand that using an R4 and downloading games from the net is theft. They are all in the current climate so worried by the potential loss of THEIR jobs. Thieving our games threatens game developer jobs. These devices should be banned outright and severe sentences given to those selling them. It is parents that don't understand these (like most new technology) or don't care. Another sign of the liberal left morality (rant rant).

Liberal left morality??? I think you want the BBC Have Your Say or Daily Mail website.

Liberal Left or Conservative Right has nothing to do with it. If people can get stuff for free then they will, regardless of their political or even religious persuasion. I know of right wing devout "Christian" people that play pirated games yet would never think of shoplifting or stealing a game from someone's house.

It's good news, but unfortunately the manufacturers won't really care as the R4 was discontinued a few months ago anyway in favour of an upgraded version that's compatible with the DSi.

Lets be honest here. The profit margin on a silly little DS game which is about 64mb is outrageous!!!! I think £30 for a crad that you can fill with games is the correct price. Greed, greed, greed and all you retailers are in on it!!!
