PC sales in record decline

Gartner predicts 11.9 per cent contraction – the largest in the sector's history

Worldwide PC sales will fall at their sharpest rate in the history of the sector this year, according the latest figures from Gartner.

According to the research firm, a total of 257m units will be shipped during 2009, a decline of 11.9 per cent compared to last year. The biggest fall in the history of the channel was in 2001, when shipments fell by 3.2 per cent in 2001.

I take it that this means pre-built packages e.g. Dell and not the sales of individual components? I don't know a single person who has ever bought a pre-built PC. Except laptops. Does this include laptops?

I think you are talking about the Home user market.

The business market buy pre built PCs. This is where i suspect the majority of the decline has come from.

Personally, I don't know of any SME thats doesn't buy pre built.
