94% of parents take responsibility for their kid’s gaming

Whilst 69 per cent of kids say they want their parents to be more involved in policing the games they play

A new study entitled Play Safe, Play Smart from Microsoft has claimed that 94 per cent of UK parents feel “personally responsible” for checking the age ratings on the games played by their kids.

In addition, the report says that 73 per cent of UK parents are aware of parental control system present on modern games consoles.

However, it seems that there’s plenty of positivity toward gaming amongst UK adults. 80 per cent see gaming as a vital component in a balanced blend of modern and traditional entertainment. 74 per cent believe games are educational, 61 per cent see them as a great social experience and 52 per cent feel games bring their family together.

On the flip side, 69 per cent of kids would like to see parents be more involved in checking the suitability of the games they play. 47 per cent of the children spoken to claimed that their parents never vet the titles they play. 64 per cent said they were sometimes allowed to play titles rated higher than their actual age.

No details were given concerning how the survey was conducted.

I have worked in a large game store for almost 1 year now, and I must be serving the 6% who don't, as I have yet to have a parent who is buying and age restricted game for little Johnny refuse to buy it when I point out the age restriction to them. The whole rating system is pointless until parents realise that these guidelines are there for a reason!

I'd like to see this survey conducted in the retail outlets, I have only once in two years seen a parent refuse a game to her child when the staff pointed out that a BBFC 18 means the same on a game as is does on a movie. Credit to her, she did ask first, but it was still a talking point amongst the staff when they had left. This afternoon in an indy store i saw a member of staff point out a high rating to a customer who turned to her young son and said "No wonder you want it so badly" before handing over her cash.
Rather than skirt the issue, the indusrty needs to strongly address it. Don't get rid of mature titles, but do properly educate parents/guardians in the same way that other media formats do.

Ditto, I am not surprised the details of how this survey has been carried out have not been released, and I would severely question the 73% awareness of parental controls on consoles as in years of testing consoles I have only encountered one console with this feature turned on. Finally, 69% of kids want their game play controlled? Again this would seem to be fantasyland to anyone who has children.

And this backslapping by parents is why little seven year old Johnny's favorate gave is GTA. The biggest problem with the age system isn't shops, its parents giving in to the whine factor of the kids.

I've been a hardcore gamer for the past thirty years, and just speaking to my neice and nephew scares me silly on what is the current big hits in games at school. Until parents can understand that giving a 18 rated game to a seven year old is just as bad as giving them hardcore porn, they will never learn. It's 99% all the parents fault.

That statistic cannot be true, as a teacher of primary aged kids the number of them who have Gears of War 2 etc is closer to the inverse of that data. Parent's have no understanding of the ratings and content within a game. Gobsmacked.
