Platform holder 'not consulted' over use of PlayStation-like controller in controversial promotion
MCV understands that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is considering legal action over the use of a PlayStation-like controller in the Government's controversial Change4Life print ad.
The ad – which depicts a young boy sitting on a sofa under the words, ‘Risk an early death. Just do nothing’ – has already inspired a critical reaction from many other corners of the video games industry, including Sega, Atari, Future Publishing, TIGA, ELSPA and MCV.
A source close to Sony revealed to MCV that the agency behind the ad, The Gate, had not contacted the platform holder to ask about using a controller that bears a close likeness to PlayStation's pad.
The ad forms part of the Government’s Change4Life Campaign, and was created by agency The Gate in conjunction with the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK and Diabetes UK.
MCV has contacted The Gate for comment.

Go Sony!!
Excellent, I hope this ends up costing these people a lot of money, just like their advert is going to do to games sales.
All we need now is for Nintendo to counter the add using Wii-Fit, just to highlight how wrong this advert is. I don't think there are many people who could argue at the steps Nintendo have made to help gaming to become more health friendly.
So regardless of whether you have the (wrong) opinion that "Nintendo is just for kids", it's time to stand behind them, because they're doing a damn site more than the other players in the next-gen battle. They've got more people onto their feet to play games, and that can only help gaming's argument in this matter.
Re: Go Sony!!
Yeah, let those gov. bastards taste the legal wrath Sony's lawyers will rain down on them. It's high time institutional pressure on games gets challenged and put down once and for all. First it was the whole "... games make you more violent" argument and now this. The bastards.
Re: Go Sony!!
I'm usually against all this suing some company using something similar blah blah, in this case I support it. The reason im for it is because these adverst are using games as a scapegoat, making people believe games are responsible for all these health problems.
Re: Go Sony!!
may as well ban school or working at a desk - too much sitting around surely? totally misguided and just plain old wrong advert....
Re: Re: Go Sony!!
The problem with society today, is a Government-made problem. The Government is so wrapped up in PC/Elf'n'Safety that children can't do any active things like they used to.
I play on the computer (PC and Console) for hours, but i'm the fittest guy in my family, because i cycle to work and i go swimming at the weekend. Life is about balance, and elf'n'safety screwed up that balance.
I hope Sony sue them for millions. A better idea would've been using a TV instead. My argument will always be, Office Workers are not obese, yet they sit behind computer screens all day long. What is the difference with that and playing a console (except playing a console is far more fun).
Go Sony!!
Re: Re: Go Sony!!
This is weird, I feel hopeful that Sony will rake in the money and file a lawsuit. This is almost as strange as supporting Fox News when they were pro *** rights. I don't know who I am anymore.
Silly!
I think we should sue all TV companies(apart from the Beeb ones),then move on to the men who invented TV,then move on to those sad Basterds who magic the power of God(Electricity)?Until we reign supreme HA HA HA ! Then my pretties,we will reign! Can I sleep now?People lets stop feeling sorry for ourselves,Get over it!!
Since 1991..............
On the nose!
Surely this advert has done exactly what they were trying to achieve; this is going to be in newspapers, it will be talked about through-out the industry and the governement will be discussing it closely. Yes this may cost them but it seems it takes shock tactics to get anyone to listen anymore.
I don't agree with the message though, gaming does not cause health issues and does not certainly kill people at a young age. I am a keen MMO player and have invested some hours into it, but I also go to the gym 5 times a week and I eat a healthy diet. We can't force people to be healthy, funnily that free will we shout about when it comes to our rights also involves what parents and people shove down their throats!
Re: On the nose!
I truly hope that The Giant called Sony go through with this and hit them with an army of lawyers.
I also hope that they win and make the organisation responsible for this pay so much money, that they become an example to anyone who unfairly kicks any industry like that in the teeth.
