RETAIL BIZ: Empire Total War tops the charts

Killzone 2 settles for second place; HAWX debuts in fourth spot

RETAIL BIZ: Killzone 2’s reign at the top of the ELSPA GfK-ChartTrack All Formats Top 40 has been cut short after just one week with the news that Sega’s PC RTS Empire: Total War has entered the listings at number one.

Sony’s PS3 exclusive FPS slips to second this week, one place ahead of Nintendo’s Wii Fit, which gains a place on last week.

Ubisoft’s latest addition to its Tom Clancy franchise, flight sim HAWX, debuts strongly in fourth position, one place ahead of Microsoft’s Halo RTS Halo Wars, which slips from second to fifth.

The only other new entry in the charts is Nintendo’s GameCube remake Mario Power Tennis, whose debut on the Wii enters the Top 40 in 23rd.

The ELSPA GfK-ChartTrack All Formats Top Ten in full (for the week ending March 7th 2009):
1. Empire: Total War (Sega)
2. Killzone 2 (Sony)
3. Wii Fit (Nintendo)
4. Tom Clancy’s HAWX (Ubisoft)
5. Halo Wars (Microsoft)
6. Professor Layton and the Curious Village (Nintendo)
7. Street Fighter IV (Capcom)
8. FIFA 09 (EA)
9. Call of Duty: World at War (Activision Blizzard)
10. Ben 10: Alien Force (D3P)

RETAIL BIZ: Well done Sega

What's with the headline?

Retail Biz: Actually impressed to see Empire: Total War take the top spot. I would have put money on it not even making the Top 10. But I've been proved wrong, and it's a testament to Sega for putting the money behind the game.

Oh, and I was surprised last week when Killzone toppled Halo Wars. Unpredictable.

But ...PC gaming is dead?

Right?

Wonder how well it did with digital distribution on top of that too.

?

Just goes to show that games aimed at giving players a deep but accessible experience aren't for a "minority of hardcore players". There is space in the market for variety of experiences and game types. And as people have been saying PC gaming is dead since the release of PS1 we need to start looking at the people saying it and say: "Is it just wishful thinking?"
